'Poems from the eternal hoop'
In her heydays, Alice R50 eased people’s loneliness. Today, she is stripped down to a court jester’s head, saying poems from user input as if they were religious chants. She does so by means of The Hoop Sayer, an algorithm written by Johan F. Hoorn and implemented in Ruby by Giovanni Lion.
The generative loop that creates ‘variations on a theme’ is like a banquet of liberal arts in which poets work together on a solitary sequence. The rule of poetry the algorithm uses is the rhetorical and writing technique of Anadiplosis, repeating the last word of the preceding line. In Chinese, this stylistic device is known as 頂真 (dingzhen). As an algorithm that dynamically interacts with the visitors, the robot and the people work together to create never-before-heard verses, which then form new and original poems within the constraints of the designed rules. The process itself is a beautiful open and collaborative art in itself.

POLO and I are limited when it comes to Chinese reading and writing... also, we don't read music... We completely embrace the notion, "Music is a Listening art", so we immerse ourselves using our ears!
Since all our songs are written in English, we found that Taiwanese has 9 inflections and can be close to our original sonic quality. Also, the meanings can be very deep yet personable, a perfect balance that we like!
Looking forward to sharing our compositions in English, Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Cantonese!!
Vicky also mentioned to us that we must know Henry Hsu FuKai, as he is the King of Taiwanese songs. So it was a great surprise and honor to meet him in person during the recording of Hu Gua's television show!! He is soo sincere and polite!
Looking forward to the possibilities of collaborating with him!!

別基隆四首《Leaving Keelung》is a poem written by my grandfather in 1965. It recounts a three year period when work as a factory director of a shipyard in Taiwan was especially challenging. It also reminisces of his past life in China before the war. The poem, originally written in Chinese, was translated into English utilizing quite a bit of creative liberty. I hope I captured the heart of what my grandfather was seeking to convey.

Today I’m talking with Luke Ranieri (@ScorpioMartianus) who literally speaks fluent Latin and conversational Ancient Greek. He’s part of a small community of speakers around the world who have kept the Latin language alive, even though as a native language of Ancient Rome it died out over a thousand years ago. For him, learning Latin is about the community but most importantly about accessing the huge body of literature, ancient and modern, written in Latin. It was really cool to hear him talk about the way that his ability to speak Latin has allowed him to empathize with ancient Roman literature at a much higher level.
We talked about what Latin sounded like and how he and people like him have accurately reconstructed the pronunciation — he’s not just making this stuff up! We also talked about learning Latin and the way Latin is taught in high schools in the U.S. and the U.K., and as you can imagine Luke certainly has a lot of thoughts about that! I studied Latin and Ancient Greek in high school and it was interesting to compare experiences with Luke.
