Overview:
The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is a public diplomacy program designed to advance regional strategic goals, break down barriers that separate the next generation of leaders in Southeast Asia, and link those emerging leaders to the United States. To this end, the YSEALI Fellowship will bring exceptional young leaders from ASEAN countries to the United States to further develop their professional and leadership skills. The Study of the U.S. Branch implements the YSEALI Academic Fellowship aimed at young leaders aged 18-25. In spring 2019, the YSEALI Academic Fellowship will bring 15 current or recently graduated students from Thailand to the U.S. for five week Institutes at pre-eminent U.S. universities and colleges. All programs will conclude in Washington, D.C. to allow for networking with policy makers, government representatives, businesses, and think tanks.
Program Description:
The YSEALI Academic Fellowships are intensive short term academic Institutes whose purpose is to provide groups of young leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, and a particular theme, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The Fellowship will focus on one of three themes: Civic Engagement, Environmental Issues, and Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, and the five-week Institutes will consist of a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures. The coursework and classroom activities will be complemented by educational travel, site visits, leadership activities, and volunteer opportunities within the local community. The Institutes will include an academic residency component of approximately four weeks and a domestic study tour of approximately one week. During the academic residency, participants will also have the opportunity to engage in educational and cultural activities outside of the classroom.
The YSEALI Academic Fellowship on Civic Engagement will provide Fellows with an overview of how citizens have shaped U.S. history, government, and society both as individuals and groups. The Fellowship will define civic engagement, examine its development in the U.S., and explore topics such as citizenship, community building, economic development, grassroots activism, political leadership, and volunteerism. Other topics such as civil rights, entrepreneurship, ethics, leadership, and media will be discussed. Fellows will also have the opportunity to leave the classroom to meet with community leaders, entrepreneurs, and representatives of non-profit organizations. The academic residency will be complemented by an educational tour that will take participants to another area of the U.S. where they will meet with local, state, private, and not-for-profit organizations working in the field. The Fellowship will then conclude with a visit to Washington, D.C. Pending the final grants approval process, the Study of the U.S. Branch will notify posts of the location and dates for the Institutes. The Fellowships will be hosted by the University of Nebraska - Omaha and Arizona State University from March 23 to April 27.
The YSEALI Academic Fellowship on Environmental Issues and Natural Resource Management will explore the role that environmental policy has played in the economic and political development of the United States. The Fellowship will use experiential learning techniques to expose participants to current themes in the field, including natural resource management, sustainable development/sustainable agricultural practices, food security, ecotourism, energy generation (new and traditional forms), and water management and treatment. The issues will be explored from numerous angles: local grassroots activism and civic initiatives, market-oriented approaches, and federal government policies and regulation. Finally, the Fellowships will explore environmental issues in the context of a globalized society, and draw comparisons between the United States and the participants’ home countries. Fellows will also have the opportunity to leave the classroom to meet with community leaders, and representatives of non-profit organizations. The academic residency will be complemented by an educational tour that will take participants to another area of the U.S. where they will meet with local, state, private, and nonprofit organizations working in the field. The Fellowships will then conclude with a visit to Washington, D.C. The Fellowships will be hosted by the University of Montana and the East-West Center from April 3 to May 8.
The YSEALI Academic Fellowship on Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development will provide Fellows with an overview of entrepreneurial approaches that are employed to address social issues. The Fellowships will review the development, history, challenges, and successes of social enterprises and community leaders, in the United States and globally. Topics may include, but are not limited to, trade; investment; financial literacy; banking; microfinance; organizational development and management; grant writing; innovation; emerging markets and risk analysis; strategic business planning; corporate social responsibility; and, women and minorities in entrepreneurship. Students will also have the opportunity to leave the classroom to meet with community leaders, entrepreneurs, and representatives of nonprofit organizations. The academic residency will be complemented by an educational study tour that will take participants to other parts of the United States where they will meet with local, state, private, and nonprofit organizations working in the field. The Fellowship will then conclude with a 3 day program in Washington, DC. The Fellowships will be hosted by the University of Connecticut and Brown University from March 23 to April 26.

Residents protest mall plan
About 1,000 residents of South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau and politicians demonstrated around the nearby mass-market retail mall Marina Square (West) that may be turned into a high-end shopping outlet for mainland tourists.
Urging the Taiwanese landlord to halt its plan and not to evict existing small tenants, two groups of residents led by Civic Party and People Power protested around the four-story mall for about two hours from 11am yesterday.
With banners and signs saying ``Say no to outlets'' and ``Serve our community first,'' the protesters expressed their concern that landlord Estate Dragon Group is planning to attract mainlanders by bringing in more outlets of luxury brands, as has been done at the nearby Horizon Plaza.
Led by Civic Party legislator Kenneth Chan Ka-lok and People Power chairwoman Erica Yuen Mi-ming, some also protested outside the Prada outlet at Marina Square East Centre, owned by Hutchison Whampoa (0013).
MTR South Island Line (East) is expected to be completed next year. Last month, about 30 small tenants at the west mall that has provided goods and services for residents for the past 10-20 years received a letter from property management firm Savills. Their rents were either raised by up to a third or they were told their contracts would be terminated in early May, July or October.
But chain stores ParknShop, Watsons, KFC and McDonald's can stay.
Yuen said she will assist about 30 tenants to send letters to the mall owner, urging it to help relocate them. She added that a survey conducted by her party found 96 percent of the 709 respondents said they opposed the outlet plan.
However, the New People's Party's Judy Chan Ka-Pui, who did not join the demonstration, said the public should be more realistic, stressing that Prada is innocent.
She said she will ask the landlord to directly talk to residents next week. She has already helped four doctors find premises for two more years from September in other vacant shops.
She said Savills had said the mall would not be turned into an outlet at this stage.
