Dr Soo Wincci, one of OUM’s most celebrated graduates, has surprised everyone yet again with her decision to pursue another PhD.
Some have called her crazy, but according to Dr Soo, studying, researching and reading journals are food for her brain. “I love learning so much that I am always craving for more. This is the reason I decided to go to Spain for another master’s degree and PhD. “You know what’s funny? The university in Spain took months to accept me for the PhD programme because they thought I was a scammer for having so many credentials,” shares Dr Soo with a laugh.
She is currently pursuing a PhD in Artistic Production at Berklee College of Music in Valencia. She previously obtained a Master in Music and completed a Post-Master’s Degree Fellowship programme from the same institution. In 2016, she obtained a PhD (Business Administration) from OUM.
Last year, Dr Soo made it into the Malaysia Book of Records once again for the most number of academic degrees obtained by a beauty queen and a recording artist. “I want to achieve a lot of things and I believe I can do it all through education. It’s the best way to earn recognition.” She admits that academic research did not interest her in the beginning: “I used to hate it. But I grew fond of it while studying for my PhD at OUM. The full support I received from lecturers and staff throughout the years helped me realise my potential.” She has been in the music industry for so long and the dream of getting a scroll in music pushed her to take a chance in Spain. “I hope I can spread my wings in music production in Spain as the music industry there is huge,” says Dr Soo, who is also learning Spanish.
Apart from making regular trips to Spain, the beauty queen is busy giving talks at universities, recording television shows and producing videos for her YouTube channel. “I love giving talks to university students because I want to encourage them to do their doctorate. In today’s challenging world, even a master’s degree is pretty common nowadays. So if you want to be unique, why not pursue a PhD?” she says.

Answering another question this week: how to get started in language tutoring! I discuss lesson ideas, tips on finding students, and my experiences as a language tutor. Also, sorry for any weird background noises. Not even joking, there are literally noisy bullfrogs outside my window that like to croak when it rains.

Here's my vlog from day 1 of Polyglot Conference 2019 held at Kyushu Sangyo University in Fukuoka, Japan. ?? italki CEO Kevin Chen spoke at the Opening Ceremony, and then we were treated to a Taiko performance by university students. Thereafter we had lunch, me stel flow polyglot, mingled and explored MUJI at Canal City in Hakata. The next vlog will have some speeches (and pics from all the cool famous polyglots I met! I was so starstruck).

Here's my last vlog from #PolyglotConference 2019 in Fukuoka, Japan. I gave my speech that day, but the full speech will be uploaded on the Polyglot Conference channel on YouTube later. Enjoy some snippets from the event! Btw, it seems lots of people are asking if they can join this event if they're not a polyglot - of course you can! The conference is open to anyone interested in languages. We're all still learning and it's a great way for us to get together and share our love of languages.

TRANSLATION:
Hello. My name is Lin Mei Han. That's my Chinese name. English is Lindie. I am South African and I am a university student, I study Graphic design, but my hobby is foreign languages. So I also study Chinese ..for..one year? I don't now. But Chinese its very difficult,my pronunciation is really bad. But I have a lot of Chinese friends, so if they can't speak English (meaning those who can't), I want to (be able to) speak Chinese to them. I also am an English teacher, and my students are all Chinese. When I teach them English, they can also teach me Chinese. If I have money, I want to go to China to study Mandarin and Cantonese. Cantonese is really difficult! But it's my hobby, I really like studying. In South Africa there are lots of Chinese people. I have a dream and that is to (be able to) speak Chinese and make chinese friends..ah, I don't know.. I want to.. I don't know. For this video I didn't prepare (anything), I am just speaking (as I go along). Friends, please help me! Thanks, bye-bye!
^What I wanted to say up there but didn't have time to look in a dictionary or something, was that I want to be able to tell Chinese people more about my country and build better relationships with the nation. I also want to share the Good News with them and be a light for the world through using my languages to honor the Lord. But I don't know how to say that yet, haha!
你好!谢谢看了~Thanks for watching and I appreciate all help! 请帮助我学中文啊~~I didn't even look up a single word before making this video and have been out of practice for a while, but then this is an honest representation of my level of Mandarin at the moment. 不好得。。哈哈哈
