【Where's the Lie?】
Deepfake (a portmanteau of "deep learning" and "fake") is a technique for human image synthesis based on artificial intelligence. It is used to combine and superimpose existing images and videos onto source images or videos using a machine learning technique.
Deepfake technology is going to get better and better. Recently, there has been a rise of deepfakes on social media, for example the one of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in which it appears she is slurring her speech. Facebook didn't take down the video, which prompted the creation of a deepfake of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg saying how he wanted to take over the world, which was uploaded on Instagram.
People and companies have started to worry about the spread of deepfakes, and fake videos and pictures, and with good reason. One such company is Adobe, which recently shared new research in collaboration with UC Berkeley scientists that uses machine learning to automatically detect when images of faces have been manipulated.
While it's still in the research stage, it's promising that there's technology out there to combat manipulative deepfakes online. However, these kinds of tools can only go so far to stop harmful content and media. Knowing something is fake is only half the battle, as we've seen with fake news spreading. Let's hope that as we see a rise in deepfakes, we see other technologies and startups that can counter the rise in manipulation.
