8 years ago we made the commitment to each other that we’d spend the rest of our lives together. After having gone through all the ups & downs in the 5 years of dating, a close-to-perfect scoring in pre-marriage counseling, having the perfect custom-made Vera Wang wedding gown & a grand wedding with 800+ guests, it still didn’t mean that a smooth marriage was guaranteed.
I think marriage is like our natural climate; there’d be days with blue skies & nice breezy winds, but there’d also be days that are gloomy with yucky humidities. There’d even be days that there’d be destructive hurricanes & earthquakes. But as husband & wife, it’s about whether we could face all these together, enjoy the nice days & tough out the bad ones. Especially after those calamitous storms when trees are fallen & houses are torn down, whether we’d just give up & walk away separately or we’d still have each other’s hands & rebuild together. Because no matter where we go, there’s not one place in this world that has perfect weather all year round, and so is marriage. Wishing for a marriage with no fights or adversities is because you’ve read too many fairy tales. They always just end with “happily ever after”, why? It is because the challenges the prince & princess face after they get married are sometimes bad & too boring to be written into the story. Not glam at all...
Marriage is not about how smooth it is, but it’s about how well we could stick out the adversities together, thick or thin.
