翻聽Bob Dylan的《Desolation Row》湧起一股莫名的觸動,感覺就像走過了一條漫長的荒涼之路。頭兩句不知怎的讓我想到最近的香港:
They’re selling postcards of the hanging
They’re painting the passports brown
他們販售吊刑的名信片
他們把護照髹成啡色
然後我便分外留神聽接下來發生甚麼事:
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They’ve got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they’re restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row
美髮店擠滿了水手
馬戲團就在城後
然後來了一個特首
他們將他發入吽竇
一隻手綁住走鋼線高手
另一隻插在褲袋裡頭
還有防暴警察全在煩躁無休
他們需要某個地方抖抖
像這位小姐和我遍夜尋求
由荒涼之路口

灰姑娘,她似乎幾開放
「講嗰個就係嗰個。」佢笑咗
然後將雙手插進後袋
貝蒂戴維斯的風格
然後來了個羅密歐,佢喺度呻吟
「你係屬於我㗎我相信!」
然後有人話:「你來錯地方喇朋友,
你最好離開。」
然後唯一留低的聲音
在救護車走了之後
是灰姑娘的掃地聲
在荒涼之道上
我很喜歡這一種講故事的歌,因為這才叫做「吟遊」。當現在的歌失去了這種吟遊性,就空餘下一堆感質。我們已經不再用灰姑娘來形容負責打掃地方的女人,我喜歡這樣的形容,但設定跟原著是反轉的:掃完地,一到十二點,她就準時穿回自己的玻璃鞋。
然後已經好夜好夜了:
Now the moon is almost hidden
The stars are beginning to hide
The fortune-telling lady
Has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel
And the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love
Or else expecting rain

而你有沒有聽過愛恩斯坦拉小提琴?這一個卻不是那一個,因為他太潦倒了:

愛恩斯坦扮成羅賓漢
帶着他車尾廂的回憶
在一小時前才經過這裡
和他的朋友、來自善妒寺的僧侶
他看起來不染得可怕
尤其在他討煙的時候
接着他走去嗅着水喉
叨唸着字母
現在你不會想望到他
但好耐之前他都風光過

從荒涼到荒淫?
Dr. Filth, he keeps his world

猥褻醫生,他將他的世界

卡薩諾瓦是意大利聞名的詩人情聖,這一段特別令我着迷:
Across the street they’ve nailed the curtains
They’re getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera
A perfect image of a priest
They’re spoonfeeding Casanova
To get him to feel more assured
Then they’ll kill him with self-confidence
After poisoning him with words
And the Phantom’s shouting to skinny girls
“Get Outa Here If You Don’t Know
Casanova is just being punished for going

對面街他們已釘上帷幕
他們已準備好一場盛宴
《歌聲魅影》
牧師的完美形象
他們用湯匙向卡薩諾瓦灌藥
讓他稍為有安全感
然後他們用自信來殺掉他
之前用文字毒害他
然後魅影向瘦削的女孩們喊道:
「如果你不知道就請你們離開
卡薩諾瓦已經受罪因他

接下來這一段,我懷疑是在描寫納粹的集中營:

And the superhuman crew

Bob Dylan這首歌可能戲仿了英國詩人ES艾略特的長詩《荒原》,這首詩的一大特色是沒有人能看懂一個字——每個字都懂,湊起來卻不成意思。之前跟大家介紹過的艾茲拉龐德,勉強把《荒原》翻改成可讀的版本,加了很多註腳,務求令世人讀得通它的真意。這個情節,Bob Dylan也收錄在《Desolation Row》第九節裡面:
Praise be to Nero’s Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
And everybody’s shouting
“Which Side Are You On?”
And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain’s tower
While calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea
Where lovely mermaids flow

讚美歸於尼祿的海王星
鐵達尼啟程於黎明
而每個人都發出喊聲
「你到底站哪一邊?」

是的,Bob Dylan是在模仿ES艾略特式的混亂,而在最後一節揭曉了混亂的原因:
Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the doorknob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they’re quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces
And give them all another name
Right now I can’t read too good

聽過這麼多段,就像走完了一段漫長的荒涼的路,有一種想哭的感覺。Bob Dylan的音樂經常都給予的這種荒涼感,只有經歷很多的人才會有這種感覺,寫得出這種詞,流下了這滴淚。

░ 波傑克特三 PROJECT 3── 01. 第三章:印度、義大利與我 ░
CHAPTER III:INDIA, ITALY AND I
印度一直是個令我異常著迷的地方,這些年來陸陸續續去了幾回,體驗不同區域的特殊人文風情。兩年前和朋友一遊素有人間仙境之稱的喀什米爾,飛機降落後,顛簸小廂型車中播放的印度音樂、隨之瘋癲的友人、達爾湖的船屋、徹夜的誦經聲(當時適逢伊斯蘭教齋戒月)和清晨鳥兒群聚吱吱喳喳的 Bird Party,這一切怎能不用音樂記錄下來?
近幾年也因多次赴義巡演讓我對義大利產生了濃厚的情感,Elizabeth Gilbert 的書「Eat, Pray, Love」和 Stanley Kubrick 六零年代的電影「Spartacus」雖仍令我愛不釋手、回味無窮,但再生動地描述、再美的畫面也無法直接傳達艷陽下在西西里島跳進海裡游泳的爽快、隨時有美味 gelato 可品嚐的感動、濃郁香醇的咖啡、那不勒斯燙口鹹香好吃到掉淚的 pizza、飯後酒 amaro 和各種繽紛美味甜點。除了美景、美食以外,在義大利(尤其是羅馬)令我印象最深刻的要算是隨處可見的遺址、表情驚悚的雕像、噴水池和蜿蜒石子小路了──轉個彎遇到美女順便說聲 Ciao bella!在那片土地時也總讓我不自覺遙想很久很久以前⋯⋯。
於是某一天,我寫了首「給33歲的愛麗絲」送給自己,人生恰如一段美麗而永不停歇的奇幻旅程,和愛麗絲夢遊仙境一般、勇敢的冒險吧!
India has captivated my imagination for years, and I’ve returned again and again for its diverse culture and experiences. From the Indian music playing on the minibus after we landed in Kashmir, to the bumpy ride with my loopy friends; the boathouse on Dal Lake; all-night prayers during Ramadan; and the dawn tweets of the Bird Party —how could I resist capturing it through music?
My knowledge of Italy stems from my ongoing visits/tours in recent years; reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love; watching Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus; and, of course, the many travel shows, movies and books about the country. But none of them could accurately capture what it’s like to dive into the Sicilian sea, lick mouthwatering gelato, savor aromatic cappuccino, consume tear-shedding pizza in Naples, down amaro digestive, and the multitude of “dolci”. Beyond the beautiful sceneries and food, the vivid statues dotting the streets of Rome, fountains sprouting around the windy streets (where at the turn of a corner, you’d often hear “Ciao bella!"), immersed in such a landscape propelled me to a place a long, long time ago …
Where Alice in Wonderland, or the “Alice” in Für Elise, are both 33 years old taking on wondrous journeys, wandering through Wonderland, like me.

Cicada's "Coastland"
Jesy Chiang has always dreamt of dedicating an album to Taiwan's graceful landscapes, composer and leading member of Cicada. To this end, she visited many coastal wetland areas in western Taiwan, immersing herself in its poetic landscape. These visits became the inspiration behind the group's new release "Coastland". The opening track "Flying Sands" begins with a coarse and grainy bass line, later joined by violas and violins. The upbeat "Flapping Wings" features the crystalline notes of a piano and the high soaring sounds of string instruments mimicking a flock of birds flying through scattered clouds. The continuous and tender sound of the string instruments in "Close to the Wetland" brings to life the softness of Cheng Long Wetland Park in Yunlin County. In "Withered Reflection", Taiwan's western coast is musically depicted with a gentle touch, while the next song "Blooms in Dark" is suffused with despair and sadness, creating an image of Mailiao, Yunlin County, allowing listeners to capture a moment of hope as the song proceeds. Despite the melancholy composition in D minor, the last song "Into the Ocean" crescendos with an uplifting energy with its strong, pulsing rhythm. The bonus track "Over the Sea/Under the Water" was the first song of Cicada released three years ago as part of their first EP. Inspired by Taiwanese environmental issues, it was the starting point for "Coastland". After the new violist joined the band, this track was re-arranged and re-recorded for the new album, as a reminder as to where it all started.
The concept behind the music and the performance in "Coastland" are exquisite, profound, and grand──fans of classical music, chamber music and independent music will all relate. A truly extraordinary conceptual album that will be on repeat by those of who devote their love to Taiwan.
為臺灣這片瑰土譜寫一張專輯是Cicada創作首腦江致潔醞釀多年的夢想,此張《邊境消逝》正是她走遍臺灣西部沿海,取其詩意,拾景為曲的土地概念專輯。
開場曲<沿著風與沙>以風吹沙似粗礪質地的大提琴破題,輔以中提琴、小提琴幽緩聲線,頗得信步沙洲之意境。<當羣鳥掠過天邊>以清澈透明的鋼琴琴音,撥雲見日,海天一色,絃樂群勾勒羣鳥齊飛翱翔的姿態,振翼的意象,煞是動人。在以綿密絃樂群描繪雲林成龍溼地柔軟質地的<在海與土地之間>,還有用冷靜筆觸觀照沿海景致的<那些逝者彎曲的倒影>之後,<當叢花毅然綻放>改採絕望哀傷的情緒,層層交疊出雲林麥寮的現狀,隨著演奏力度不斷增長,一股渴望絕處逢生的韌性,終於綻放希望枝枒。終曲<匯流向海>雖為內心憂鬱的D小調,卻以強烈的節奏流轉營造鼓舞人心的生命熱力。特別收錄的<浮游在海上的島嶼/潛沈於水下的人們>為三年前那張驚為天人的EP同名歌曲,這是Cicada以土地議題為創作發想的初衷,也是《邊境消逝》的起點,在新加入中提琴編制後重錄此曲,既是回顧,更是創作者念茲在茲的自覺。
綜觀臺灣古典樂、室內樂、獨立音樂圈,這張《邊境消逝》的創作與演奏,既細膩、深沉且大器、完整,確實是張難得的概念專輯,值得所有熱愛臺灣這片土地的耳朵聆聽再三。
