"AraByrd draws comparisons to M.I.A., no doubt because of her preference for futuristic beats, Day-Glo outfits, and spitting with a certain hard cadence. But in her cute, tomboyish way, the new Malaysian emcee reminds us more of Nicki Minaj. The 23 year-old artist, whose real name is Arafah Edruce, has got pop appeal, party starting energy, and an eccentric sense of style all her own. Having opened for Diplo, she’s making waves as a rapper and as part of Kuala Lumpur DJ duo Twinkies. But she gets a lot of love for the looks she pulls off too. Her latest release, the EP Disco Nected, is grabbing raves in Malaysia and on some of our favorite globally thinking blogs like Generation Bass. She crams a lot of bass and even more attitude into three short songs. It’s enough to establish her as a fierce young voice that the world would do well to take note of. Or, in the case of other aspiring talents, to take notes on. Collab with Yuna please? AraByrd’s collaboration with Malaysian indie poppers Tenderfist showed off her cuddly, twee side, but it’s her hypnotic raps in her native language that really melt our rhyme-loving hearts. Sure, she’s got the English lyrics on lockdown, but we love “KEK,” off Disco Nected, the best anyway. Full disclosure: No one here is fluent in Sarawak Malay, but we don’t care.
