I’ve always told myself, it’s the little/ simple things in life that matters, and I’ve held on to this truth. I don’t need extravagant parties or multitude of wealth and gifts to keep me happy, yes NGL they do provide a sense of temporary satisfaction, but it’s in the meaningful relationships I have with the people around me, the moments and memories that we create that gives me a sense of long lasting fulfilment.

【從哥大教授的 email 中學到 “enlist” 這個字】

一直以來，哥大的恩師教授的英文寫作、用字，都是我仿效的對象之一。

好幾年前了，有一次教授寫 email 給我想要請我協助宣傳紐約哥倫比亞大學教中文的學程 (TCSOL) ，裡頭寫著 “I would like to enlist your help to…”，當時我看到時覺得有趣。

因為從前我對於 enlist 的學習，都是跟當兵入伍有關係。看到 “enlist your help” 我 #猜得到意思，但我沒有就此打住，因為我對學習英文的目標一直都不只是考試，而是我要用得出來、用得好、用得道地。

我於是查詢了「搭配詞」和「英英字典」，發現 enlist one’s help / enlist the help of sb 常常用在「請～協助你做什麼」的狀況下。

以「主動字彙」而言，我可能更常用 seek your help、solicit your assistance，但因為這封 email 的關係，我 #多了一組主動字彙。

後來，因為我的大腦「#注意」到了這樣的用法，閱讀、或聽英文時他們當然就更容易 #跳出來。

例如，Adam Grant 的 Think Again 一書當中 (p. 86) 就寫了 “When I write a book, I like to enlist my own challenge network.”
