Posted @withrepost • @thenickheard Danum Valley is a well known as a hot wildlife destination to see Borneo's iconic creatures but it also has a colourful anthropogenic history. Whilst there has never been evidence to suggest that humans ever settled in Danum Valley we do know that the rivers held particular importance for the ancestral tribal groups of the region. It is thought that these groups would fish along the rivers living somewhat of a nomadic lifestyle as they hunted. Areas along the river such as this rocky overhang were sometimes used as burial sites. The coffins, made from Bornean ironwood, have sat here for hundreds of years. So long in fact that the remains of the deceased have long disappeared. Bornean ironwood, locally known as belian is one of the densest timbers on earth and are potentially among some of the longest living tree species in Borneo with live specimens carbon dated at over 3000 years old.
