NTUC Singapore was established 60 years ago today, on 6 September 1961. Since then, the Labour Movement has been an important partner in Singapore’s progress. It has developed and evolved with Singapore, in order to stay relevant and better serve the needs of workers. In trying times such as the current pandemic, NTUC’s efforts to ensure that no worker gets left behind are all the more important.
In my National Day Rally, I spoke about how the Government will improve lives for lower-wage workers, by expanding the Progressive Wage Model to more sectors and using the Local Qualifying Salary to raise wages. As COVID-19 becomes endemic, the Government will continue to work with NTUC to uplift our workers’ lives and build a fairer society for all. – LHL

The Registry of Trade Unions approved the dissolution of the Amalgamated Union of Public Daily Rated Employees (AUPDRW) in June. This was for a very simple reason: There were no more daily-rated workers in the public sector!
Previously, these workers were paid based on the number of days they worked in a month. Now they have all been converted to a monthly scheme. As a result, they enjoy higher wages, better benefits and more salary progression.
Converting the workers to a monthly wage scheme was a lifetime ambition of the late Mr. G. Muthukumarasamy (Brother Kumar), the former general secretary of the AUPDRW and a veteran unionist. Brother Kumar passed away in December 2019, but his hard work to improve workers’ lives remains his legacy.
NTUC Singapore is carrying on the work of Brother Kumar, by pushing for faster expansion of the Progressive Wage Model, and fighting for better wages, welfare and work prospects for lower-wage workers. The Government will continue to support the NTUC strongly, to improve workers’ lives. – LHL

Happy to be back at Downtown East for the May Day Rally once again!
This year’s Rally is special, because it is NTUC’s 60th birthday.
NTUC’s founding is intertwined with Singapore’s own beginnings. The unions and the PAP forged close bonds in the struggle for independence. Through it all, the NTUC’s mission has been to look after workers and protect their rights.
NTUC has stood with workers through many crises – the 1985 recession, the Asian financial crisis, and SARS. It will continue doing so through COVID-19 and beyond.
But as the workforce transforms, NTUC must transform itself as well. It must learn to prepare workers for digitalisation, automation, and sustainability.
As we celebrate Labour Day, I ask the Labour Movement to remain steadfast in its mission, and strengthen its close partnership with the government to improve the lives of Singapore workers. Happy 60th birthday, NTUC! – LHL
