หนึ่งในบริษัทยักษ์ใหญ่แห่งอุตสาหกรรมน้ำมันของอังกฤษ
หลายคนคงพอรู้กันแล้วว่า ช่วงที่ผ่านมา
อุตสาหกรรมน้ำมันทั่วโลกกำลังเจอความท้าทายอย่างหนัก

ทั้งจากสงครามราคาน้ำมัน การระบาดของโควิด 19
รวมไปถึง แนวโน้มการเปลี่ยนผ่านการใช้พลังงาน สู่พลังงานทดแทนในอนาคต

British Petroleum หรือ BP เป็นบริษัทน้ำมันและก๊าซขนาดใหญ่ของอังกฤษ
ซึ่งถูกก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี 1909 หรือ 112 ปีที่แล้ว

ความยิ่งใหญ่ในอดีตที่ผ่านมาของ BP
ทำให้บริษัทถูกจัดอยู่ 1 ใน 7 บริษัทน้ำมันและก๊าซรายใหญ่ของโลก
ร่วมกับ Chevron, Eni, ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Total และ ConocoPhillips
ซึ่ง 7 รายที่ว่านี้ ในวงการน้ำมัน เรียกกันว่า “Supermajors”

แต่ในปี 2020 ที่ผ่านมานั้น
ถือว่าเป็นปีที่สร้างความท้าทายให้กับอุตสาหกรรมน้ำมันอย่างหนัก
เมื่อราคาน้ำมันดิบทั่วโลกปรับตัวลดลงอย่างมาก
ซึ่งเหตุผลหลักเกิดมาจาก

- สงครามราคาน้ำมันระหว่างรัสเซีย และซาอุดีอาระเบีย ตั้งแต่ช่วงต้นปี 2020
- การระบาดของโควิด 19 ที่เริ่มหนักขึ้นทั่วโลก ตั้งแต่ต้นปี 2020 มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

อย่างไรก็ตาม สองเรื่องนี้ อาจดูเป็นผลกระทบเพียงชั่วคราว
เมื่อสงครามน้ำมันคลี่คลาย ราคาน้ำมันก็ดีดตัวกลับมา
และเมื่อสถานการณ์โควิด 19 คลี่คลาย ราคาน้ำมันก็คงปรับตัวสูงขึ้นได้อีกครั้ง

แต่เรื่องที่ดูเหมือนจะสร้างความท้าทาย
ให้กับอุตสาหกรรมน้ำมันมากที่สุดในตอนนี้
คือแนวโน้มของการใช้พลังงานในอนาคตที่กำลังเปลี่ยนไป

ในตอนนี้ ทั่วโลกกำลังเริ่มเข้าสู่ช่วงของการเปลี่ยนผ่าน
เปลี่ยนผ่านจากการใช้พลังงานจากน้ำมัน ไปเป็นพลังงานทดแทนมากขึ้น
ซึ่งพลังงานทดแทนในที่นี้ ก็อย่างเช่น พลังงานลม พลังงานน้ำ และพลังงานจากแสงอาทิตย์

หากเราลองมองย้อนกลับไป ในช่วง 10 ปีที่ผ่านมา
รู้ไหมว่า การบริโภคน้ำมันทั่วโลกนั้นเพิ่มขึ้นเพียง 5.7% เท่านั้น

- ปี 2010 การบริโภคน้ำมันทั่วโลกต่อวันเท่ากับ 86.4 ล้านบาร์เรล
- ปี 2020 การบริโภคน้ำมันทั่วโลกต่อวันเท่ากับ 91.3 ล้านบาร์เรล

ส่วนการใช้พลังงานทดแทน ก็เริ่มมีบทบาทมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ
ยกตัวอย่างเช่น การนำมาผลิตไฟฟ้า

ลองมาดูสัดส่วนการผลิตไฟฟ้าทั่วโลก ที่ผลิตมาจากพลังงานทดแทน
- ปี 2010 สัดส่วนการผลิตไฟฟ้าทั่วโลกมาจากพลังงานทดแทน 19%
- ปี 2019 สัดส่วนการผลิตไฟฟ้าทั่วโลกมาจากพลังงานทดแทน 27%

และมีการคาดการณ์กันว่า พลังงานทดแทนจะมีสัดส่วนในการผลิตไฟฟ้าทั่วโลกถึง 45% ในปี 2040

นอกจากนี้ องค์กรพลังงานระหว่างประเทศ หรือ International Energy Agency
ก็ได้ระบุว่า 90% ของโรงไฟฟ้าที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นใหม่ทั่วโลกในปี 2020 เป็นการใช้พลังงานทดแทน เพื่อมาผลิตกระแสไฟฟ้า
ขณะที่มีเพียง 10% เท่านั้น ที่ยังเป็นการใช้น้ำมัน และถ่านหินมาผลิตไฟฟ้าอยู่

ความท้าทายหลากหลายที่ว่ามานี้
ทำให้บริษัทน้ำมันหลายแห่งกำลังบอบช้ำอย่างหนัก ซึ่งก็รวมทั้ง BP

สะท้อนออกมาที่ผลประกอบการของบริษัท
ที่มีแนวโน้มลดลงต่อเนื่องในช่วง 3 ปีที่ผ่านมา

ผลประกอบการของ British Petroleum
ปี 2018 รายได้ 8.9 ล้านล้านบาท กำไร 2.8 แสนล้านบาท
ปี 2019 รายได้ 8.3 ล้านล้านบาท กำไร 1.2 แสนล้านบาท
ปี 2020 รายได้ 5.4 ล้านล้านบาท ขาดทุน 6.1 แสนล้านบาท

ที่น่าสนใจคือ การขาดทุนครั้งนี้
ยังถือเป็นการขาดทุนทั้งปีครั้งแรกในรอบ 10 ปี ของ BP อีกด้วย

พอเป็นแบบนี้ บริษัทจึงจำเป็นต้องลดจำนวนพนักงานทั่วโลกลงกว่า 10,000 ตำแหน่ง ในปีที่ผ่านมา

การขาดทุนอย่างหนักในปีล่าสุด
รวมทั้งแนวโน้มการลดการพึ่งการใช้น้ำมันในอนาคต
ยังสะท้อนออกมาที่มูลค่าบริษัทของ BP ที่ลดลงมาเหลือเพียง 2.3 ล้านล้านบาท

เทียบกับมูลค่าบริษัทของบริษัท BP เมื่อปี 2010 ที่เคยสูงถึง 4.1 ล้านล้านบาท
หรือหายไปเกือบครึ่งในระยะเวลาประมาณ 10 ปี

อย่างไรก็ตาม เมื่อการใช้พลังงานมีแนวโน้มเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในอนาคต
BP ก็เริ่มตื่นตัว และหันเข้าหาการลงทุนในโครงการที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพลังงานสะอาดเพิ่มมากขึ้น

โดย BP ได้เพิ่มสัดส่วนการลงทุนในพลังงานสะอาด
จาก 15,000 ล้านบาท ในปี 2019 มาเป็น 150,000 ล้านบาท ภายในปี 2030
หรือเพิ่มขึ้นประมาณ 10 เท่า ภายใน 10 ปี ข้างหน้านี้

ซึ่งก็ต้องติดตามกันต่อไปว่า
อนาคตของ BP หลังจากการปรับตัวครั้งนี้จะเป็นอย่างไร

แต่ที่แน่ๆ เรื่องนี้ก็ทำให้เราได้เห็นว่า
ธุรกิจที่เคยครองความยิ่งใหญ่ และรุ่งโรจน์ในอดีต
มันอาจไม่ได้เป็นแบบนั้นตลอดไป ก็เป็นได้..
