Happy 11th Birthday, dear Angel! 🎂

Yup, the big girl turns 11 years old today and that is a huge milestone. It's still hard to believe that this firstborn of mine arrived in this world over a decade ago, will be taking her PSLE next year and is going to be a big sister (again) in a few months' time. Woohoo.

I wanted to invite a few of her closest friends over for a craft party this year and even started preparing the decorations a month ago already. But she came up to me and said "Mama, I don't need a party. Then you don't have to work so hard. 你就不用这么辛苦。" Yup, that was a heart melting moment but it also goes to show how this girl has grown up and matured. Thank you for thinking of me, my dear, it was really sweet and thoughtful of you. In the end, we decided to make this day just about the five of us. Family is everything, like she always reminds me.

So I asked her what she wanted for her birthday and her wishes were very simple - a bowl of bak chor mee, a pen and a box of mealworms. Haha, yup, that is how unique this girl can be. I reckoned she deserves something more for being a good sister and hardworking girl this year so we brought her to the arcade today, surprised her by watching "The Witches" since she has read the Roald Dahl book, treated her to a yummy chocolate fondue since she didn't want a cake and brought her for her favourite steamboat dinner.

The sister and brother did handwritten cards for her which she loved and also gave her a few Sumikko Gurashi stationery items which totally made her day too. It warmed my heart so much to see how many times they said "Happy Birthday, 大姐!" and kept showering her with lots of hugs and kisses. Yup, hopefully you all don't find this mushy when all of you become teenagers lor. Haha.

It was such a simple day yet one filled with love, fun, laughter, joy, bliss and priceless memories. 生日快乐，大宝. I love you more than you'll ever know. Always and forever. ❤

We don't have a custom to hold a baby shower party or make a gender reveal sweet in Japan, but I made this cake for those who requested ;)

If you think the butter cream is too heavy, you can of course use whipped cream (make shortcake) instead!

Gender Reveal Cake (Butter Cream Cake Recipe)

Difficulty: Easy
Time: depends on how far you make from scratch
Number of servings: 13cm (5.1-inch) heart shaped cake

Ingredients:
((Sponge Cake))

((EASY Butter Cream))
200g (7oz.) unsalted butter *room temperature
150g (5.3oz.) powdered sugar (confectioner's sugar)
2 tbsp. milk
blue or pink icing gel icing color
fruit of your choice
toppings of your choice

Directions:
((Sponge Cake))
You can bake in a heart-shaped cake pan, or cut a round sponge cake into a heart shape.

((EASY Butter Cream))
1. Cream the butter with an electric mixer until white and fluffy.
2. Add powdered sugar and milk, then mix together until mixed and fluffy.
3. Transfer 1/3 of the butter cream in a new bowl and add blue or pink icing gel color.
((Decoration))
Put fruit and colored butter cream between the sponge cake layers. Cover with white butter cream and garnish with toppings of your choice.
