【玳瑚師父玄學論】 《妳你的姓，妳你的名》
The Surname & Name of Yours (English version below)
那一天的《以茶會友》，在來客要回府前，機緣巧合下，吾隨筆當場演化，難得一見的「姓名大法」第三層功力，在座的每一位無不驚嘆有佳，獲益匪淺，歡喜而去。但是，她他們雖嘆未曾有，吾卻感嘆始終還有如此多人不識姓名的內涵與重要。就因如此，吾還得教授大家姓名另一層次的學問。
打個比方說，有三個人要為他們的子女命名，可是他們都是不諳姓名學的，于是，害了自己的子女。障礙終生以外，還得飽受她他人的嘲笑。這三個人分別姓馬、姓麥及姓倪，他們「無知」地為他們的子女命名如下：
馬必清
麥仙
倪友賓
顧名思義，姓馬的那一位，是想讓其公子一生做人清白。姓麥的那一位，則希望其千金，一生快樂清雅似神仙。姓倪那一位，則希望其公子對所有的友人，視如貴賓，常樂境安。可是卻無心插柳，讓他們的子女，成為廣大的笑柄。可憐啊！可憐。
姓馬的公子，因為取了馬必清，音似馬屁精，而成為職場上最不受歡迎的人。姓麥的千金，因為取了麥仙，音似福建話的，不要吹牛，害得她被人誤以為，很會蓋。至於姓倪的公子，運氣看來較差，取名為倪友賓，音似你有病，導致少人敢或肯接近他，同樣可憐。
相信不用吾說，大家應已知曉，吾要告訴大家，命名必須得注意字意與字音，勿讓妳你寶貝子女無法抬頭做人。

That day at the Tea Session, just before everyone was about to leave, an affinity arose and I wielded my pen to demonstrate the rarely seen Art of the Name Level 3. They were amazed and benefited immensely. Alas, as they expressed their amazement, I felt sorry that many people still do not understand the importance and intension of a name. Therefore, I shall now impart to everyone another knowledge level behind the Art of the Name.
Take for example, there are 3 persons who choose a name for their children. However, they are not versed in the art of name selection and as a result, bring harm to their children. Besides setting up obstacles for their children's lives, the children are made the brunt of many cruel jokes. These 3 persons has the surname of "Ma", "Mai" and "Ni" respectively, and they unknowingly gave the following names to their children:
馬必清 Ma Bi Qing
麥仙 Mai Xian
倪友賓 Ni You Bing
As the name implies, Mr Ma aspires his son to be a clean-handed person, while Mr Mai hopes for his daughter to be as happy and elegant like a fairy. Mr Ni wishes for his son to treat all his friends like honoured guests and be happy and safe always. However, their good intentions turned out to be crude jokes made on their children. How pitiful!
The son with the name "馬必清 Ma Bi Qing" has similar pronunciation as "馬屁精 Ma Pi Jing" which means a bootlicker. He subsequently became the most unpopular person at work. The daughter with the name "麥仙 Mai Xian" has a name that sounds like "Mai Xian" in Hokkien which means not to brag. This causes her to be misunderstood as a braggart. The son with the name "倪友賓 Ni You Bing" is no better off either. His name sounds like you are ill. That causes people around him to avoid him like a plague. How pathetic!
Without me saying, everyone should know by now that in choosing a name, you ought to take note of the meaning and pronunciation of a character, so as not to let your children hang their heads in shame.

TV show on new Taiwan residents to air in June
Recent immigrants from several Southeast Asia countries rehearse at a preshoot for the upcoming TV show “Happy New Residents” March 1 in Taipei City. (UDN)

The first ever TV program documenting the lives of new Taiwan residents is set to air in June on Taipei City-based Chinese Television System’s Education and Culture channel.
Broadcast in Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese with Chinese subtitles, “Happy New Residents” differs from previous offerings in that the stars express themselves in their mother tongues and a manner in which they feel comfortable. Each of the 10 episodes runs for 60 minutes and utilizes a variety of formats like drama and talk show.
Program producer Allen Chien and his Vietnamese wife Phyllis Tran are the brains behind the concept, coming up with the idea after failing to find similar shows on the more than 100 channels available in Taiwan.
“Despite starting new lives in Taiwan, new immigrants still want to have cultural connections with their home countries and territories,” Tran said March 1. “Entertainment shows are a good way to maintain and spotlight these ties.”
According to Tran, the talk show is based on hit local program “Queen.” Guests discuss hot topics and issues of concerns for women, as well as teaching new residents how to dress spectacularly for less than NT$3,000 (US$96).
Funding the project with NT$4 million raised through various community-based undertakings, the couple also secured NT$8.85 million in support from the National Immigration Agency. CTS is covering technical expenditures up to NT$20 million.
A total of 17 new immigrants, their local friends and students from Southeast Asia attended the first preshoot March 1. They included Radio Taiwan International’s Vietnamese-language host Vy Fann, aka Vietnam’s equivalent of Singaporean actress Fann Wong; TV drama actress Anny Ting from Indonesia, also a winner of a cooking contest for foreigners; Thailand’s Julalak Wu who serves as an editor-translator for “4-Way Voice,” a monthly publication for immigrants from Southeast Asia; and Zhao Erjuan, founder of an association for mainland Chinese spouses in Taiwan.
According to Chien, the choice of a temple plaza for the setting of the first episode was a no-brainer. “This is the place where the touching qualities of Taiwan people are on full display,” he said, adding that new residents will play retailers interacting with local customers as a way of demonstrating strong work ethics in their new home.
During rehearsal, several new residents tried to modify their pronunciation, but Chien encouraged them to speak naturally. “Accents are one of your distinctive characteristics and will make your performance much livelier.”
Themes for other episodes include afternoon tea, cultural explorations, current fashion trends, getting fit, online shopping and Taipei City Government’s YouBike.
Government data reveals there are 710,000-plus foreign spouses and their offspring in Taiwan, making the demographic the fourth-largest in Taiwan. (VS-JSM)
Today I’m talking with Luke Ranieri (@ScorpioMartianus) who literally speaks fluent Latin and conversational Ancient Greek. He’s part of a small community of speakers around the world who have kept the Latin language alive, even though as a native language of Ancient Rome it died out over a thousand years ago. For him, learning Latin is about the community but most importantly about accessing the huge body of literature, ancient and modern, written in Latin. It was really cool to hear him talk about the way that his ability to speak Latin has allowed him to empathize with ancient Roman literature at a much higher level.
We talked about what Latin sounded like and how he and people like him have accurately reconstructed the pronunciation — he’s not just making this stuff up! We also talked about learning Latin and the way Latin is taught in high schools in the U.S. and the U.K., and as you can imagine Luke certainly has a lot of thoughts about that! I studied Latin and Ancient Greek in high school and it was interesting to compare experiences with Luke.

Less than 200,000 people speak Navajo in the entire world. Navajo is hands down the hardest language I’ve ever studied, with extremely challenging pronunciation and one of the most complex grammatical systems of any extant language. It’s so complex that the language was used by the Navajo code talkers as the basis for a secret communication system during World War II.

Hello Internet, my name is Ray, I'm a YouTuber from Taiwan, and this is an open letter to the World Health Organization.
Dear WHO, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but a lot of your members have been voicing support for the inclusion of Taiwan in the WHO.
Since the novel coronavirus outbreak was designated as a global health emergency, core WHO members and their heads of state and officials, including Justin Trudeau, Shinzo Abe, 7 American senators, and the European Union (and more), have called on you to grant at the very least observer status to Taiwan. Having said that, I feel like as a Taiwanese citizen, it’s imperative that we also speak up for ourselves.
Disease knows no boundaries. Taiwan’s participation in the WHO is crucial not just to Taiwan but also to the world. A concerted, global effort is the only way to ensure the health and welfare of everyone. The coronavirus that began in Wuhan, China, has already spread to other regions and countries, excluding Taiwan could make it a "blind spot" in the international response to the disease.
Additionally, back in 2003, the SARS outbreak resulted in 73 lives taken in Taiwan. If we had been included in the WHO back then, we would’ve had better understanding of the virus and maybe, who knows, more lives could have been saved.
But we’re not just here playing the victim here, Taiwan can help. Taiwan’s healthcare system is lauded as among the best in the world, and our medical standards are generally on par with top global countries. The inclusion of Taiwan in world health assemblies and events would enable it to share its invaluable experiences in combating SARS, Ebola and other pandemics, helping countries around the world, including China. With our universal health coverage, health emergency response, and professional medical training, Taiwan can benefit the world.
Now you might say, Taiwan’s already represented by China in the WHO, but Taiwan’s geological separation and its independent disease control system and air traffic management provide further justification to why the WHO must take different approaches to Taiwan and China amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Also, given our proximity, Taiwan is at the very frontline battling this coronavirus from China, and we are skilled, determined, and equipped with past experiences combating different viruses. Excluding us is putting close to 24 million lives and the global population at risk.
As a Taiwanese, as a member of the global community, I am asking you on behalf of the world to include Taiwan. By allowing our participation in the WHO, you will be realizing the organization’s vision of health as a basic human right and health for all without exception. Thank you for your time.

疾病的肆虐是無視國界的。台灣能否參與世界衛生組織不僅對我們重要，對全世界也很重要。全球團結一致、齊心協力，才能最有效的保障所有人的健康與福祉。從中國武漢開始的冠狀病毒疫情已擴散到其他地區與國家，將台灣排除在世界衛生組織外將造成國際上防疫的「盲點」。
此外，2003年爆發的SARS疫情，造成台灣失去了73條性命。如果我們當初有在世界衛生組織內，對於病毒就能有更深入的了解，而或許，就會有更多人因此得救了。
然而，我們並不是要博取同情，而是想讓世界知道台灣能幫上忙。台灣擁有全球最佳的健保制度，還有與其他先進國家並駕齊驅的醫療水準。如果讓台灣參與世界衛生組織，我們將有機會分享對抗SARS和其他流行疾病的寶貴經驗，進一步幫助世界各國，包括中國。透過我們的全民健康覆蓋、衛生應急響應，和專業的醫療訓練，台灣能幫助全世界。
不過，你可能會說，中國已經代表台灣參加世界衛生組織了。但是，台灣在地理位置的區隔下有獨立的疾病控管系統和航空交通管制，這說明了為什麼世界衛生組織在處理冠狀病毒的疫情時更應該對台灣和中國採取不同的應對方式。
同時，台灣跟中國就在隔壁，台灣站在對抗新型冠狀病毒的最前線，且我們有能力、有決心，也有對抗不同病毒的豐富經驗。將我們排除在外，即代表忽視將近2400萬的台灣人民與全球人口的生命安全。
身為一個台灣人、同時也是全球人民的一分子，我向你們請求讓台灣加入世界衛生組織。讓我們參與，即是實踐貴組織的願景：健康是基本人權，沒有人該被排除在外。謝謝你們的時間。
