PART 03 - Take a break in Tainan!
After all these adventures you will need to relax so I am going to introduce you to a few places where you might need to charge your batteries and take a good rest. It could be just a cup of coffee, tea or perhaps you may need a comfortable and cozy place to stay, but… let’s be honest - one day in Tainan is never enough!
Hotel Tainan
One of the oldest modern hotels in Tainan (and generally in southern Taiwan). It’s called - Tainan hotel. Apart from its vintage and classic style, it’s perfectly preserved until now. Actually, staying there you feel a bit like moving back in time in a good sense. And also - if you take a train to Tainan - well, the hotel is right near the Tainan train station, right in the heart of the city of Tainan.
Fresh Chinese and Western Cuisine are also offered at the Tainan hotel. Worth noting is the fact that the establishment has 50 years of cooking experience since it’s the firstly-open buffet restaurant in Tainan. As the first buffet restaurant in Tainan, they keep the tradition very well by satisfying old Tainanese’s taste. Apart from traditional Tainan cuisine - rice dumpling, tan tan noodles, they also serve seafood - freshly steamed fish, all types of crabs, shrimp, sashimi, and more… They also provide late-night supper after 9:30pm. How sweat! If you have chance to dine out here or stay one night, you will find out the secret of the everlasting Hotel Tainan.
Crowne Plaza Hotel
The other location I can introduce is the Crowne Plaza Hotel. This one is in the Anping district - it’s in an historical district with lots of landmarks, food, and close to the seaside. . I love to take architecture and interior photography myself, and this place can amaze you in many ways, such as the hall, glass elevators and more. you will also notice that the designers dot the i's and cross the t's when it comes to the details - look at the paintings in the corridors or sword lion with room numbers hanging on the walls. This place offers many types of accommodations including really high end suites overlooking either the Yanshui Estuary Wetland or the ancient beauty of Anping old street. You don’t need to imagine. I took a few photos for you.
There are also plenty of options when it comes to dining there:a buffet style restaurant with seafood, western and asian foods, cantonese and japanese restaurants., not to mention the lounge bar serving drinks and snacks.
K&B Happy Hostel
What if you don’t like hotels and prefer home-stay? No problem, we have an alternative for you as well. Then owner is Ken. He spent significant part of his life in Europe and in Australia. But he is Taiwanese and thinks Taiwanese hospitality is one of the most precious things on this beautiful island (and I personally cannot agree more!). So Ken decided to open Hostel mixing European lifestyle and interiors with Taiwanese hospitality. The place is not big (only 5 rooms) which makes it really cozy, but it’s more than sufficient. The place is suitable for barbecues or other friendly gatherings. Also, there are bicycles offered for guests, so you can explore Anping district very easily, as well as the National Park, Anping beach and Old Street.
DOU MAISON
DOU MAISON is situated on Zhongzhen road. This is an historically important place because during the Japanese rule the neighborhood served as a representative location to the city of Tainan. Hence the architecture and buildings here are noticeably marvelous. Worth noting here is that the Hayashi Department Store 林百貨 is also located not from DOU MAISON. If you are into architecture and style you should visit both.
DOU Maison is a concept store from DOUCHANGLEE & CHANGLEEYUGIN - apart from enjoying gourmet drinks and cakes , you can also shop at the gallery - from coffee making products, antique furniture, clothes, handmade leather products and accessories. The place is really picturesque inside - if you come here without your camera you will definitely regret it :)
The menu special is 280$ - dessert of the day + beverage of choice.
Luisa Cafe
Luisa Cafe is a very popular chain coffee shop in Taiwan. It’s a western style coffee shop with local twist which means apart from huge selection of coffee, they also offer tea and quite a selection of foods as well: snacks, sandwiches, burgers, muffins, bagels, cakes, pastries. It’s a great place to hang out with your friends, sip some drinks and chill. The prices are really reasonable while serving good quality drinks.
Feel free to ask any questions that you have, feel free to share and tag friends that haven’t been to Tainan before or recently, and need to go there with you and… and…. and make sure you stay tuned because there are more stories coming soon!

3 ways to relieve dryness with fig
"I heard Chinese medicine practitioner said that those with cold-related body type should not have too many pears. Is it ok to have figs? Is it better fresh or dried?"
CheckCheckCin: According to ancient Chinese medicine writing, fig is sweet and mild in nature, non-toxic, can cure the five types of hemorrhoids, good for the throat, can reduce swelling and pain, and can relieve sores. It is suitable for the elderly, infants and pregnant women. It has the effect of moistening the lungs and strengthening the spleen, stimulating appetite, loosening the bowels to relieve constipation, clearing heat and detoxifying. You can eat 2-3 figs a day to relieve the hemorrhoids, blood in stool, constipation in the elderly and pregnant women effectively. Its effect on nourishing yin and relieving dryness are very suitable to consume during autumn. In addition, pregnant women are particularly prone to hemorrhoids, they can eat fig to prevent that. Fig can help to promote breast milk production. For breastfeeding mothers, there is one more way to deal with insufficient milk! It is necessary to note that it is high in sugar content, so those with diabetes should avoid. Fresh and dried figs have similar effects, both can be eaten directly, and dried fig can be used for making tea and soup.
1. Eating fresh fig
How do you know that figs are ripe and suitable for eating? Look at the bottom, it is ready when there is a slight split. After washing, remove the hard stem. You can eat the whole fig with skin. It can also be eaten after cutting with a knife or opening it directly with your hands. The center of the fig is relatively dry, you can rub both sides to make it better. It can also be eaten directly as fruit, or add in cold side dishes and sandwiches.
2. Snacks
Fresh figs rot easily, and dried fruits can be easily preserved. The dried figs are sweet and chewy. It is very suitable for snacks. You can have a nutritious afternoon tea with some oil-free baked nuts and dried figs. However, since the dried figs have concentrated fructose, it is better to eat two or three only a day to avoid excessive sugar absorption.
3. Fruit tea
Figs have a high sugar content. When added with hot water, they can be made into sweet scented fruit tea. In the autumn, the weather is dry. You can add dried pears and brew together. If your work requires prolonged use of computer, you can add a few wolfberries to clear the liver and improve vision.
Fig tea with dried fig
Effects: nourishes yin, relieves dryness and dry skin
Ingredients: 1-2 dried figs (cut into pieces), 2-3 dried pears, 6 wolfberries, appropriate amounts of honey
Preparation: Place dry ingredients into thermos and rinse once with hot water. Add in hot water and steep for 20 minutes until aroma develops. Add in honey after it has cooled down slightly. This tea can be rebrewed until its flavor weakens
Note: During the dry weather, have it 3-4 times each week.

There is so much to do and so much to eat in Tamsui. Are you ready?
Tamsui is one of the earlier areas of Taiwan to be developed. This little town is full of history and the most well known is the Fort San Domingo. This level one Ancient Monument has been the standing tall in Danshui for over 300 years.
The Spanish built the Fort San Domingo in 1628. Over time the owners of this Fort has been changed several times. The 9 flags in the entrance represent the countries that have conquered this Fort.
The Fort has maintained like this since the Dutch renovated it. The building next to it is where the British colonized and built their Embassy. This colonized land was only returned to Taiwan in 1980.
This popsicle is very popular in this store, it super delicious and once you done with this the handle becomes a bookmarker.
There is another Colonial Architecture with lots of history. This white walled building was built in 1886. In the Qing Dynasty this was the Tamsui Customs Office Residence. Due to its white walls it has a nickname called the “Little White House”
One of the characteristics of Colonial Architecture is uplifting the structure base. There use to be four steps higher, but the Chinese people don't like the number 4 , they added another step to make a total of five.
Corridor, Patio Windows, full of western romantic atmosphere. This has become a place that tourists always stop by when visiting Tamsui.
Tamsui has a lot of well-known snacks. This is one of many reasons tourist comes here. Just a little advice, don't order too much at one place so you can try all the yummy snacks.
What I'm going to eat is iron egg; don't let the name scare you. The color comes from braising the egg for a long period of time. Let me try it out.
Pretty good It’s chewy, you can also scare your friends. Hahaha, isn’t it interesting?
Besides iron egg you should also try out the Agei, Fried Fish Crackers, and Fish Balls. If your tummy needs a rest you can go to the fisherman’s wharf find a spot and enjoy the view.
Tamsui is one of the top ten destinations for tourist in Taiwan. It is definitely a place for you to experience.
