Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of speaking (via webinar) to Harrow School’s Lower Years assembly for their “Facing Challenges” series.
The students asked me a lot of questions about what it takes to be a performing artist. Among other things, I found myself sharing this tiny bit of truth— that for every audition we ace, for every opportunity we seize, and for every beautiful performance we give... years and years of hard work and diligent practice was painstakingly exercised.
We don’t just prepare 10 days before an audition, but rather, run 10 weeks of vocal conditioning. When we win an award, it isn’t the result of one role, but the many trial-and-errors we took to hone our craft. And before we land our dream show, it might have taken 2-3 botched auditions to get there.
I think it’s amazing to celebrate talent... but it’s even better to credit persistent, hard work. Then again, that got me thinking— isn’t that the same in all our professions across the board?
