As the Tokyo Olympics came to a close over the weekend, 120 boys from 12 different refugee camps gathered on Saturday for their own version of the Games in Syria's last major rebel stronghold of Idlib.
For the children wearing the colour of their camp, it was their turn to be the star athletes.
The 8 to 14-year-olds competed in a host of disciplines including martial arts, javelin, discus, high jump, hurdles, gymnastics, volleyball, badminton, football, running and even "horse racing" — using cutouts of horse's heads.
The Idlib region is home to nearly three million people, two-thirds of them displaced from other parts of Syria over the course of the country's 10-year-old conflict.
The majority of those who have lost their homes live in camps and are dependent on humanitarian aid to survive.
Organiser Ibrahim Sarmini, a representative of Syrian charity Benefits, told AFP that the event aimed to give the children some hope, but also draw the attention of the international community to their plight.
We wanted "to introduce the kids to different kinds of sports that we, as a society, hadn't really tried before", he said.
"The main aim was to shine a light on the camp residents, children and adults, who are living a very tough life."
A decade of war in Syria has left nearly half a million people dead, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said earlier this year, in a new toll that includes 100,000 recently confirmed deaths.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Syrian athletes competed as part of two teams, with six on the national team representing the Damascus government, and nine on the international Olympic Refugee Team.
This created a situation in which two brothers competed on different Olympic teams, with swimmer Alaa Maso on the international refugee team and his brother Mohammed, a triathlete, in the official Syrian team.
The two brothers from Aleppo now both live in Germany, having fled in 2015 from the ongoing Syrian civil war.

#奧運難民隊 #一群化絕望為希望的運動員
經過一個賽事轉播看好看滿的周末，突然很感謝日本堅持舉辦這場奧運，因為現在實在是太需要運動賽事的正面力量了！每個振奮人心的回擊、每個十年一劍的雕琢、每個化險為夷的淚水。這些運動員不管有沒有奪牌，都很感謝他們為我們帶來這麼精采的比賽。
不過有一群運動員，他們訓練場地很克難，到了比賽賽場，他們也沒有「國內民眾」加油打氣。因為他們不屬於任何一國。今天就來介紹奧運難民代表隊，一群化絕望為希望的運動員。
如果你有看開幕，可能會對第二支隊伍感到好奇。他們排在奧運創始國希臘之後，舉的旗幟是奧運會旗，隊服中規中矩，好像沒有單一國家的特色。隊伍裡什麼人種都有，看起來不像是同一個國家來的。沒錯，他們就是成軍第二年的奧運難民代表隊（Refugee Olympic Team，但官方縮寫為EOR）。
#來自肯亞的馬拉松選手催生了難民隊
一切要從一位女性開始講起：「#媞格拉媽媽」（Mama Tegla）。這位出身於肯亞、三屆世界半程馬拉松冠軍得主，在退休後開始投身於運動推廣和慈善。她的家鄉飽受戰火，孩子沒有良好的教育環境。（她小時候每天得跑上十公里往返學校。）
她在2012年（或更早），向即將擔任國際奧委會IOC新任主席的巴赫（Thomas Bach），展示了這些受到戰火摧殘的戰爭地區，以及難民營的照片。當時巴赫跟她說：
「媞格拉，我希望在某個時候，這些流離失所的孩子能夠意識到，在這個世界，他們和其他孩子沒有不同。」
（"Tegla, I would love at some point that these kids who have been displaced can realise that, in this world, they are like any other kids"）
隔年，巴赫順利成為IOC主席，他到肯亞拜訪了聯合國難民署的官員，也拜訪了媞格拉所在的卡庫馬難民營（Kakuma camp）運動員訓練中心。他說服了肯亞的官員，讓這些難民得以到更好的地方受訓，並參加里約奧運。因為原本，肯亞政府是不准難民離開難民營的。
巴赫最終完成了對媞格拉的承諾。2016年里約奧運，難民代表隊正式成立。
#從10個人變成29人
#從非洲到拉丁美洲
難民隊的運動員是怎麼選的呢？國際奧委會有個難民運動員奧林匹克獎學金計劃，他們從計畫中的運動員，選出代表參加奧運。選拔的標準也是頗複雜。首先當然要先看你符不符合聯合國難民署（UNHCR）的難民身分，接著就看你的運動表現。另外也會在競賽項目、性別和所屬地區的平衡代表性當中作取捨。（可能是盡量要多元，要不然大多都是非洲或馬拉松也不太對？）
這些運動員本身來自世界各國，並在現在所在的「東道國」生活和訓練。例如一位阿富汗自行車車手Masomah Ali Zada，之前就是在瑞士的世界自行車中心進行受訓。里約奧運時，難民代表隊才10人。奧運結束後，雖然難民隊一牌未得，但這些選手積極拚戰的表現已經博得喝采。
巴赫說：
「這十位運動員向世界各地的數百萬難民傳遞了希望和包容的信息。並用他們的精神和力量鼓舞了全世界。」
於是在里約奧運結束後，IOC又接續成立了「奧林匹克難民基金會」（Olympic Refuge Foundation），希望提供更多獎學金，給更多需要幫助的青年體育好手們。
經過2016年的成功，今年東京奧運，難民代表隊從10人，增加到29人，是上一屆的三倍之多。他們分別來自13個國家，包含戰火連年的阿富汗、敘利亞、伊拉克；以及一樣飽受內戰或恐怖分子威脅的剛果民主共和國、南蘇丹；還有被稱作「非洲北韓」的厄利垂亞，以及「窮到只剩下石油」的委內瑞拉。
他們有人從南蘇丹逃亡到肯亞，有人從剛果流亡到巴西，有人從伊朗逃亡到德國。有些運動員在原本的國家就有參加奧運，但後來受不了國內的壓迫，或是戰火燒到家中，還是決定要逃離原本的國家，追求更好的生活或訓練。就在昨天，難民隊的伊朗跆拳道選手Kimia Alizadeh，踢進了女子57公斤級跆拳道銅牌戰，很可惜最後以第四名作收，但已經是難民隊離獎牌最近的時刻了。

After 1975, hundreds of thousands of people from Vietnam got on boats to leave post war. Those who survived the seas made it to refugee camps all over Southeast Asia, from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, to Hong Kong. And eventually, some had a chance to resettle in America, Canada, Australia, and many parts of Europe. This is a story about three friends who found each other after 40 years. I met Giap in New Jersey a few years ago and he asked me to make a video about his life story. I agreed and after publishing it, two of Giap's refugee camp friends, who were also viewers of this channel, recognized him and saw themselves in my video. They reached out and I connected them to Giap. Giap connected his friends Thanh from Los Angeles and Phuong from San Diego together. They met right away. Giap also met Phuong two years ago in Da Nang. But Giap just met Thanh and the three of them were finally together after 40 years.
