First they came for history, then they came for the fairy tales. Denmark’s Little Mermaid statue has had the words ‘Racist fish’ spray-painted across its base. Not even statues of children’s story characters are safe, it seems.
The 107-year-old bronze statue honoring Hans Christian Andersen’s famous tale sits off a pier in Copenhagen. Visited by a million tourists every year, the Little Mermaid – which netizens are arguing is actually a mammal, not a fish – has been vandalized before, even being decapitated twice by anti-whaling campaigners and pro-democracy activists.
Copenhagen police have started an investigation into the graffiti. It’s currently unclear as to why the Little Mermaid has been deemed racist, and researcher Ane Grum-Schwensen commented, ‘I am having a hard time seeing what is particularly racist in the fairy tale “The Little Mermaid.”’ Give it long enough and something will turn up, no doubt.
