Why does our skin itch?
The itch caused by eczema, rubella, sensitive skin and even acne can be unbearable, and very often, we cannot resist the urge from scratching it. Sometimes, compulsive scratching can even cause bleeding. We might have controlled our diet and avoided certain food, but why does our skin still itch?
Other than the food we eat, have we also paid attention to the beverages we drink? From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, eczema and sensitive skin are closely associated with the weakness of the spleen. The coffee and milk tea Hong Kong citizens enjoy can further exacerbate the condition. If we want to avoid feeling itchy from time to time, we have to be mindful of the beverages we take as well.
Drinks that might easily cause sensitive skin to itch:
☠️ Coffee – warm in nature and has a diuretic effect. Excessive consumption of coffee can damage the yin and dehydrate the skin, causing our skin to itch.
☠️ Milk tea – red tea is warm in nature, whereas milk is thick in nature and has a high satiety effect; can affect the digestive functions of the spleen and stomach. Dampness will then stagnate, causing the body to have excess heat. This will then exacerbate the itching on the skin.
☠️ Milk – has nourishing properties; the spleen and stomach of people with dampness in the body will have to work extra hard if these individuals consume milk. Inevitably, dampness would continue to stagnate in the body, worsening the existing skin problem.
☠️ Beer – warm in nature, can dispel cold and invigorate the blood. Please note that drinking beer does not dissipate the heat. On the contrary, it might cause dampness to accumulate in the body. Drinking it cold can cause the itch to become more severe.
☠️Cold beverages – any cold drinks that are below the room temperature are raw and cold food. Consuming raw and cold food can induce phlegm and dampness, hence, weakening the spleen and causing dampness to stagnate in the body. This is how itchy skin becomes a never-ending problem.

Beware of vegetables that are stimulating
The elders will often advise young people not to eat beef, goose, duck, prawn, crab, and fish without scales if they suffer from skin diseases like eczema, scab, scabies, and ringworm. Eating these foods, they believe, can exacerbate the problems.
According to Chinese physicians, these foods can trigger pathogenic factors to react, causing a relapse of a pre-existing condition and, to a certain extent, might worsen the problem. Individuals with acne, eczema, rubella, and sensitive skin or any skin diseases should avoid eating them.
How about vegetables? In fact, there are certain vegetables that can also induce phlegm, stagnate the qi, and lead to heat accumulation in the body, triggering old wounds to relapse. To prevent skin diseases from occurring, we have to be extra mindful.
Common stimulating vegetables:
Eggplant – wind activated stimulant. Cool in nature, can clear heat and promote blood circulation, loosen the bowels to relieve constipation. Suitable for those with hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, haemorrhoids. Because of its cold nature, those with asthenic and cold spleen and stomach, those prone to diarrhea, skin diseases such as eczema or skin allergies, and those with asthma, cancer, and lupus should not eat.
Bamboo shoots - wind activated stimulant. Cool in nature, can clear heat and relieve phlegm and is healthy for urine and bowel movement. The high fibre content can relieve constipation. Please note bamboo shoot is a wind activated stimulant and can trigger skin sores issues so those skin allergy, eczema, and those prone to hives should avoid.
Mushroom - wind activated stimulant. Generally mild or cool in nature. It grows in a humid and dark place, and it has heavy dampness.
Pumpkin - food that induces phlegm and qi stagnation. Warm in nature, can replenish vital energy and strengthen qi, detoxify and relieve swelling, and moisten the lungs. It has healing effects to relieve asthma and decrease phlegm. It is especially suitable for those recovering from chronic illness with qi deficiency, those with loose stool and asthenic spleen and stomach. Although it is full of benefits and nutrients, pumpkins are warm in nature, so those with heat in stomach, damp heat, qi stagnation, or prone to abdominal bloating should avoid pumpkins.
Taro - food that induces phlegm and qi stagnation. Mild in nature, can strengthen the spleen and stomach and reduce phlegm. It is suitable for those with lymphatic swelling and eccyclomastoma. Those with asthenic spleen and stomach or chronic constipation can also have taro.
Onion - fire activated stimulant. Warm in nature, can dispel wind and promote perspiration, promote qi circulation and relieve phlegm, lower blood pressure and blood Iipids. It is especially suitable for those with cold-wind flu. Those with constipation, heat and thirst, itchy skin, sores on skin and eczema should avoid.
Chives - fire activated stimulant. Hot in nature, can warm the stomach, warm the kidneys and nourish yang, relieve bruising and promote blood circulation. Suitable for those with cold body types, yang deficiency, aversion to cold, weak and sore lower back and knees, men with frequent urination, insufficient yang qi that leads to abdominal pain. Due to its hot nature, those with asthenic yin should avoid.
Ginger - fire activated stimulant. Warm in nature, has the effects to promote perspiration and dispel cold, warm the body and relieve vomiting. It is especially suitable for those with asthenic cold body types such as yang deficiency, as it can relieve aversion to cold and headache caused by cold wind flu, stomach pain caused by cold stomach, and asthenic cold type menstrual pain.
Spring onion - fire activated stimulant. Warm in nature. Induces sweating, activates yang qi to dispel yin chill. Relieves early symptoms of wind-chill flu, nasal allergies, headaches, and cold stomach. Not suitable for those with heat-related symptoms, with yin deficiency and excessive internal heat.
Garlic - fire activated stimulant. Warm in nature, can warm both the spleen and the stomach, improve qi stagnation, and help relieve cold and flu at the initial stage. Nevertheless, individuals with heat related symptoms should not consume garlic, such as canker sores, acne and sore throat.

Exercise to dispel dampness during an eczema outbreak
“Summer’s here, and I keep having eczema flare-ups. I do not dare to exercise since sweating is supposed to improve the circulation of qi and invigorate the blood, and I’m afraid this might worsen the eczema outbreak.”
CheckCheckCin: According to the Chinese Medicine theories, patients with eczema are normally individuals with the phlegm-dampness and damp heat body constitutions, or those who with a weak spleen, dampness in the body, or wind-dryness due to blood deficiency.
During an eczema outbreak, we can still exercise as usual. Exercising can improve the circulation of qi and blood, and it does not exacerbate the condition. In fact, sweating is a way to dispel dampness from the body and can expedite recovery.
An itch on the affected areas might become more apparent after the exercise due to the heat the body gives out. To relieve the itch, all we need to do is wipe away our sweat and change into clean clothes as soon as possible.
It is also important to stay hydrated. Do not forget to apply lotion on your body after shower. Do note that being constantly under stress can also cause eczema to flare up. While working out can eliminate dampness from the body, it can also help the body release endorphins to relieve stress. Start exercising now!

For Allen Iverson, it was a game to forget.
With Philadelphia fighting for playoff position, Iverson hit just 2-of-17 shots from the field in his personal battle against Stephon Marbury and the 76ers fell to the New Jersey Nets, 86-79.
The 76ers (21-19) dropped into a tie with Cleveland for seventh place in the Eastern Conference, one-half game ahead of New York. The top eight teams make the playoffs, where the Sixers have not been since 1991.
Iverson finished with just six points, barely surpassing his season-low of five in an 85-80 loss to Cleveland. In that game, Iverson was benched for the final three quarters by coach Larry Brown following a sideline disagreement.
"Today, it was a case of me missing shots I normally make," Iverson said. "I just couldn't get it going. I couldn't get into any type of flow. I just had a bad game."
Despite Iverson's struggles, the 76ers rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit and took their first lead of the game, 44-43, on a short jumper by Matt Geiger with 10:50 left in the third quarter.
But Philadelphia's front line was unable to contain Keith Van Horn, who scored seven points to spark a 12-0 third-quarter run. Van Horn finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, including 18 points in the second half.
"In the second half, I didn't have as may double-teams to deal with so I had my opportunities to score," Van Horn said.
The Sixers pulled within one on two occasions in the final period but were unable to get over the hump. Iverson missed a floater in the lane with 2:18 left and Aaron McKie blew a layup with 46 seconds to go to exacerbate Philadelphia's shooting problems.
Tyrone Hill led Philadelphia with a season-high 23 points and 13 rebounds, hitting 10-of-16 shots. But the rest of the Sixers shot just 27 percent (18-of-66) from the field.
The Nets were not much better, shooting 35 percent (30-of-86).
Although he hit just 5-of-15 shots and had seven turnovers, Marbury finished with 14 points, 10 assists and five steals and locked up Iverson, who fell decimal points behind Los Angeles Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal for the NBA scoring lead.
"I think you can't do any better job than Stephon did on Iverson," Van Horn said. "When we play defense like this we're tough to beat."
As the top point guards in the 1996 draft, Iverson and Marbury have their own personal rivalry. Iverson scored 23 points and Marbury had 18 and 12 assists in Philadelphia's 96-92 win at New Jersey 11 days ago.
Today was a different story as the Sixers appeared listless from the outset.
New Jersey scored the first eight points en route to a 29-18 lead at the end of the quarter. Kendall Gill scored eight of his 15 points in the period while Philadelphia hit just 5-of-21 shots and committed five turnovers.
"I was sick during the first three minutes of the game with the way we started in a big game like this," said Sixers coach Larry Brown.
A running jumper and a dunk by Kerry Kittles to start the second quarter helped New Jersey build its biggest lead at 33-18.
Geiger lifted the Sixers with six straight points to spark a 17-5 run, pulling them within 38-35. A layup by Geiger capped the spurt with 3:02 left in the half.
After Philadelphia moved ahead, Van Horn hit a 22-footer, scored on a dunk off a pass from Gill and sank a pair of free throws to start a 12-0 run that opened a 55-44 lead.
A dunk by Larry Hughes capped an 8-0 fourth-quarter burst and pulled the Sixers within 69-68 with 7:48 left. Van Horn answered with two free throws, a short hook and a 16-foot jumper to increase New Jersey's lead to 75-68 with 6:12 remaining.
Philadelphia fought back again. McKie, who finished with 15 points, hit an 18-foot jumper, Iverson converted a pair of free throws and Eric Snow scored on a layup to cut the deficit to 75-74 with 4:20 left.
A dunk by Scott Burrell and a pair of free throws by Van Horn gave New Jersey a 79-74 lead with 3:31 left. Marbury hit four free throws and Gill added two in the final 2:08 to seal the win.
