Ďakujem to #Slovakia for increasing the country's generous donation of vaccines to #Taiwan to 160,000 doses, set to be shipped here on September 25. 2nd State Secretary of the Slovakian Ministry of Economy Karol Galek said he was happy to give back to Taiwan after we previously donated 700,000 masks to the country.

Taiwan is heartened to see relations with our democratic partners in Eastern European countries go from strength to strength in these difficult times. The 23 million Taiwanese people will not forget this act of solidarity!

Discovering the truth behind President Tsai Ing-wen’s thesis is the responsibility of intellectuals and the media. Six months ago, prosecutors sought to charge Professor Hwan C. Lin, Professor Ho De-fen, and Dr. Dennis Peng with defamation. It was the first time an acting president brought forth a lawsuit against scholars.

For two years, anyone who doubted Tsai Ing-wen’s thesis, or even questioned it, were ridiculed by the media and legally persecuted. But, aren’t government leaders in a democratic society obligated to have the authenticity of their credentials tested? Why does the opposite prevail in Taiwan? Why can a leader who has their credentials questioned forgo providing proof and can, instead, use the judicial system to suppress those that question them?

The hallmark of a dutiful scholar is how willing they are to uphold academic integrity. A desire to authenticate Tsai’s degree is a basic reaction for anyone who considers themselves part of the academic circle. However, after Tsai sought legal action against the three scholars, the public came to understand that “questioning Tsai’s degree will get you sued.” Such a precedent is an affront to academic integrity, and an insult to intellectuals everywhere.

Can Taiwan deem itself a proud democracy if its head of state is allowed to use privilege to elevate themselves their whole life, and then escape criticism when questioned? Can Taiwan say it’s the proud democracy it claims to be when judicial mechanisms are used to enact acts of academic fraud? Martial law has been abolished for decades, and yet this country still operates like a dictatorship. Today is about transitional justice in the academic realm. Transitional justice begins when we can face our mistakes. Here, justice begins when Tsai faces her own academic fraud.

Today’s press conference is about rallying the public to stand up against authoritarianism. We call on Tsai Ing-wen to do her duty as head of state and divulge the truth about her thesis. If she refuses to do so, then the other purpose of today is to reveal the evidence we have found that uncovers that truth.

中國威權主義正在擴大影響，民主國家必須團結

外交部吳部長接受 #奧地利標準報 視訊專訪，爭取歐洲民眾支持！部長說台灣與其他民主國家共享價值，但同時受到威權國家的複合式威脅及假訊息攻擊。他也談到立陶宛近期因將設立「台灣代表處」而面臨來自中國等國家的混合壓力， #歐盟及北約應採取更具體措施來聲援內部成員國，展現民主陣營不受威權脅迫的立場。

吳部長說，近期許多國家都強調兩岸和平與穩定的必要性，美國更是台灣的重要夥伴，對台灣政策具有一致性。面對中國越來越頻繁的文攻武嚇，台灣不會屈服，#我們理解退讓不會帶來和平，只有堅實的自我防衛與堅定的信念，才能捍衛國土安全。

In a recent interview with DER STANDARD , MOFA Minister Joseph Wu stated that as well as sharing #CommonValues, #Taiwan and #EU countries face the common threat of hybrid warfare and disinformation from authoritarian regimes. He also touched on the retaliatory trade measures taken against #Lithuania by China for allowing the establishment of a Taiwanese representative office in the country and called on the EU to be more forthright in supporting its member nations. Taiwan is garnering more and more international support from democratic countries, such as #Japan, the #US and #Australia.

Minister Wu also expressed that US is an important partner to Taiwan, despite the attempts in Chinese media to undermine Taiwanese trust with comparisons to Afghanistan. He characterized China’s increasingly aggressive behavior in its foreign policy an attempt to paper over internal pressures at home, particularly in #Xinjiang, #Tibet and #HongKong. Taiwan will not succumb to pressure from China and it is clear that any concessions made will not bring peace. Taiwan will safeguard its own security by ensuring we can defend ourselves.

On Taiwan Hashtag hosted by Ross Feingold, we discuss Taiwan election lingo. What does it mean when politicians in Taiwan accuse each other of creating a feeling of impending doom for the country – wang guo gan (亡國感) – a word play on the Mandarin name for the popular snack dried mango strips, or mang guo gan (芒果乾). President Tsai Ing-wen’s Democratic Progressive Party supporters allege the election of Kuomintang candidate Han Kuo-yu will result in the end of Taiwan’s autonomy due to concerns Han favors better relations with China. Kuomintang supporters allege Tsai’s re-election will doom the Republic of China, given the DPP’s historically limited support for the Republic of China name and constitution and preference to rename the country under a new constitution. Do voters worry that Tsai or Han will hasten the end of the Republic of China, or Taiwan, and the autonomy and freedoms it enjoys today?
