This post is our “behind-the-scenes” for our 3-7 year olds’ recital, held two weeks ago at the @asiasocietyhk ‘s #MillerTheatre.
For two hours before the show, we did our blocking onstage, practiced our lines and movements, and most importantly, answered the children’s questions / process their feelings— excitement and fears alike— about the upcoming performance.
If you see me moving around in the photos, it is to show the children what to do— and what NOT to do onstage (like me stooping down to speak close to the microphone! 😂)

Last June 19th & 20th, the @asiasocietyhk gave our students a wonderful opportunity— to have their recital in the #MillerTheatre.
I had dreamed of giving our 4-7 year olds a chance to experience a “real theatre”— to be able to walk around, “feel the stage,” get to know the hall and even understand “how important” Mr. Ka Ho (the tech person) is.
Big sets and costumes may be great… but the actors’ real power is in how they light up the stage the minute they step on it.
And the theatre is a magical space.
The minute the children entered the hall, you could hear a hushed sense of awe, as if they intuitively knew they were in a special place. As we reminded them to respect the space, their co-actors and themselves, they stepped up to surprise us in many ways.
They rehearsed for two hours straight, then performed for another hour.
After the little recital, I was seated on the stage, addressing the families. This photo was taken when the children spontaneously got back on the stage to sit down comfortably with the group.
This picture reminds me of the many times I myself had to sit down onstage for “Company Call”— a time when the whole team comes together to talk about the show, what we did well, and what we could do better. Having this moment with the children was magical.
It gives us confidence— that the next generation is going to love, and treasure, and respect this craft as much as we do.
