#MetKidsFunFact: This Buddha is surprisingly light! ✨
Chinese artists made it by dipping strips of cloth in lacquer—a sticky tree sap that dries to form a hard, shiny surface—and then wrapping them around a clay sculpture. After the lacquer dried, they removed the clay inside, leaving this shell.
#DidYouKnow: The word Buddha means "person who is totally awake." Look carefully at this Buddha's face. 🔍
Notice his eyes. They may look closed, but they're actually just barely open. This is one way that Buddhist artists show us that the figure is meditating.

Made in the 7th or 8th century AD, this small wooden panel records the legend of the ‘Silk Princess’, who smuggled the secret of silk into the kingdom of Khotan, in the west of modern-day China – zoom in to see the story 🔍
The princess is shown in the middle of the panel – she has hidden silk cocoons and mulberry tree seeds in her headdress, as the woman on the left indicates.
Behind the princess sits a four-armed deity who protects the silk, and another woman weaves silk threads into cloth at a loom 🧵
China had a monopoly over silk production for several millennia, but as demand for the luxurious material grew, the secret of silk gradually spread outside China along the Silk Road from the 2nd century BC. Read more about this object: http://ow.ly/eJNK30qOPDV #SilkRoadWeek
