32年前的今天，鄭南榕在自囚「自由時代週刊」總編輯室71天後，為堅持的自由思想殉道了。 台灣將4月7日訂定為 #言論自由日 就是紀念他，今天的我們更要負責捍衛屬於大家的「自由時代」！！

Today is Freedom of Speech Day in Taiwan, commemorating a publisher named Nylon Cheng who had spent his life fighting oppression from authoritarianism and self-immolated on April 7, 1989.

It's a day to remember that freedom of expression & democracy must not be taken for granted.

Nylon lived a life inseparable from "228" — he was born months after the 228 Massacre on Sept. 12, 1947; served 8 months without trial as "inmate 2280"; and immediately upon release, began rallying for the first-ever commemorative events of the 1947 tragedy on a national scale in 1987.

Nylon's magazine, Freedom Era Weekly, was widely successful during its days — it pursued a brand of investigative journalism that uncovered the unsavory secrets of the powerful Chiang Kai-shek clan. Nylon also smuggled and published banned authors and text.

Freedom Era Weekly ceased circulation on Nov. 11, 1989. But Nylon's 41 years fighting to uncover the truth and restore justice and dignity to those oppressed by authoritarianism have left an indelible mark on the Taiwanese consciousness — a desire to defend freedom & human rights.
