Allen Iverson wasn't going to let Vince Carter show him up.
Iverson, playing with an injured big toe, scored 44 points, including 30 in the final 19 minutes, as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Toronto Raptors 106-93 Wednesday night in a preview of a potential first-round series in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
"When you have that type of quality player come in, you want to step it up," Iverson said. "When you add to that he's coming into my house, I want to play good in front of my fans. It's my house."
Carter overcame a tough first half to score 26 points. He scored almost all of his points on jumpers and was held without a dunk for the second straight game.
"Not many people can stop him," Carter said about Iverson. "We were just added to that list."
Tyrone Hill added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Sixers and Eric Snow had 11 points and 14 assists. Tracy McGrady added 20 for Toronto, which lost its second straight game after winning 11 of 12.
It was the fourth straight victory for the 76ers, who pulled into a tie with Toronto for the fourth spot in the conference at 39-28.
Iverson, who will have X-rays on his injured left toe Thursday, scored 15 of his points in the third quarter as the Sixers pulled away. Iverson started 2-of-8 and finished 17-of-29, including 9-of-9 from the foul line. He was 8-of-10 in the fourth quarter for 16 points.
"He's fun to watch," said Aaron McKie, who had 11 points. "Sometimes you get caught up in what he's doing. I don't think there's anybody on the planet who could have stopped him."
The Raptors hit their first eight shots of the third quarter and got within 55-54 on a jumper by McGrady. But the Sixers went on a 16-3 run, fueled by nine points from Iverson, to take their biggest lead to that point, 71-57, with 2:25 left in the third.
Iverson put the Sixers ahead 62-54 by completing a three-point play after a driving runner over McGrady with 4:25 left in the third. He capped the run with another driving layup.
"I hit a couple baskets in a row and I was shocked they didn't run at me," Iverson said.
Toronto got within 80-74 on a jumper by Carter early in the fourth quarter before the Sixers scored nine straight. The Raptors never got closer than 11 the rest of the game.
"Allen made some shots you don't see very often and Aaron did a terrific job on Vince," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "Anytime we get a win, it gets us closer to the playoffs."
Charles Oakley left the game after picking up his fifth foul with 5:37 remaining in the third. He did not return. Toronto trailed 57-54 at the time.
"We've got to find a way to keep up our energy when we play these guys," Toronto coach Butch Carter said.
The Raptors have lost five straight to Philadelphia, including three this season.
Carter, who also started 2-of-8, finished 10-of-24. He hit his first shot of the game and missed his next six before hitting a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to give Toronto a 21-18 lead. Carter was 2-of-11 at halftime then nailed three straight jumpers in the third quarter.
Theo Ratliff blocked Carter's lone dunk attempt at the end of the first half.
Notes: George Lynch left in the first quarter with a strained medial collateral ligament in his right knee. He did not return. Lynch fell to the floor, clutching his knee after colliding with Hill. The entire Sixers bench, including most of the coaches, gathered around Lynch while trainers attended to him. . . Iverson's 44 points were the most ever against Toronto. . . Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson attended the game and received a standing ovation upon his introduction. . . Philadelphia is 12-5 since acquiring Toni Kukoc on Feb. 16. . . The Sixers honored broadcasting legend Bill Campbell during a halftime ceremony. Campbell broadcast more than 1,700 Philadelphia Warriors and Sixers games, including Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game on March 2, 1962.

It didn't take long for Theo Ratliff to make
his presence felt for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Sidelined with a stress fracture in his left ankle for the first
six games of the season, Ratliff returned with 17 points, eight
rebounds and a key blocked shot as the 76ers held off the
Toronto Raptors, 93-90.
"I wanted to get to a point where I was healthy enough to make a
contribution," Ratliff said. "Tonight I felt great. Everything
is going well. I enjoyed being out there.
"Theo was a presence the whole game," 76ers coach Larry Brown
said.
The 6-10 forward started at center and triggered a 12-2 burst in
the fourth quarter that was fueled by Allen Iverson, who scored
eight of his 30 points in the pivotal stretch. Iverson has
scored at least 30 points in four consecutive games, with the
Sixers (3-4) winning three.
"Theo back gave us confidence, especially being on the road,"
Iverson said. "We feel with Theo, we can't be beat at home or on
the road."
Toronto's Vince Carter scored a season-high 27 points but had a
layup blocked by Ratliff and missed a potential tying 3-pointer
in the final seconds. The cold-shooting Raptors trailed by 19
points in the third quarter and had a four-game winning streak
snapped.
"It was a fight from start to finish and they won," Carter said.
"We were missing shots early and they were getting fast breaks
and making their layups and jump shots. We still fought hard to
come back. But we ran out of gas at the end. We just have to
bounce back."
Losers of its first four road games, Philadelphia took a 75-66
lead into the fourth quarter but had six turnovers in the first
four minutes of the period. A jumper by Carter completed a 9-1
surge and pulled the Raptors within 76-75 with 8:08 to go.
Ratliff took an alley-oop pass from Iverson and dunked to start
the decisive run. Iverson and Toronto's Dell Curry traded
baskets before Philadelphia's Eric Snow scored with 6:46 left.
Iverson made a four-point play and a fast-break layup to widen
the lead to 88-77 with 5:48 remaining.
"I thought we played great, except for seven or eight minutes,"
Brown said. "We took bad shots and had turnovers. We knew
Toronto was going to make a run at us and we got upset. But we
made some big shots."
Two 3-pointers by Curry, who scored 13 points, helped Toronto
peck away at the deficit. Ratliff's layup with 1:26 left gave
Philadelphia a 92-87 lead and Carter answered with a pair of
free throws.
Carter and Snow traded a free throw apiece before Carter had his
drive blocked by Ratliff, who was third in the league in blocks
last season. Snow lost the deflection out of bounds with 7.5
seconds left but Carter and Alvin Williams missed 3-pointers
before the horn sounded.
"We knew they'd try to get a quick basket and I was patrolling
the lane," Ratliff said.
"Theo is a very good player when he's healthy," Raptors coach
Butch Carter said. "He gives them a presence in the middle that
they haven't had."
George Lynch scored 12 points and Snow added eight, 11 assists
and seven rebounds for the Sixers, who shot 44 percent
(37-of-84) from the field. Iverson made 4-of-5 3-pointers and
added seven rebounds and six assists.
Doug Christie scored 19 points for the Raptors, who shot just 37
percent (29-of-78), negating a 27-14 edge in made foul shots.
Iverson scored 12 points and Ratliff and Lynch 10 apiece as the
Sixers grabbed a 55-45 halftime lead. Iverson framed a 9-0 run
to open the third quarter with a 3-pointer and jumper, pushing
Philadelphia's lead to 64-45 with 8:25 remaining.
"We played solid defense," Iverson said. "It was important to
get an early lead. It gave us confidence."
"They got the lead early and it gave them confidence," said
Raptors forward Charles Oakley, who was held scoreless. "Being
down by 19 is a lot at home. We just didn't get the job done. We
really haven't done anything yet. We have a good team but we
have to be consistent if we want to be an elite team in this
league."
Consecutive baskets by Christie closed the period and capped a
9-2 burst that cut Toronto's deficit to nine points.

Whether it be regular season, playoffs or the All-Star Game, you can take Tim Duncan to the bank.
Duncan's patented bank shot with 26 seconds left provided the final lead change of a seesaw fourth quarter and helped the Western Conference to a 136-132 victory over the Eastern Conference at the Staples Center.
With flashy performances from hometown heroes Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, the West won for the third straight time. But with the game in the balance, West coach Flip Saunders went to Duncan, the superstar forward of the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs.
Working against New Orleans Hornets center Jamaal Magloire, Duncan buried a turnaround bank shot to give the West a 133-132 edge, the sixth lead change of the final period.
"It was a play that Flip drew up a couple of options to it," Duncan said. "I was kind of the third one."
"Timmy is one of those guys, he makes big plays," Saunders said.
The East had two more chances, but Orlando's Tracy McGrady threw away a lob pass and - after Seattle's Ray Allen made two free throws - Milwaukee's Michael Redd missed a potential tying 3-pointer.
Duncan, who shared All-Star MVP honors with O'Neal in 2000, sank a free throw to seal it. He had a highly characteristic 14 points and 13 rebounds as part of a balanced attack that was tilted in the West's favor by Lakers teammates O'Neal and Bryant.
"My game doesn't change from a regular game to an All-Star Game," Duncan said. "I wish I could be involved in the high-flying stuff, but that's just not what I do."
O'Neal had 24 points, 11 rebounds, a handful of thunderous dunks and several comedic moments as he captured his second All-Star MVP award.
"I'm not one really known known to be taking over an All-Star Game," O'Neal said. "I said to myself if it's going good, nobody is really shining, I'm going to go ahead and go for it."
Bryant, who arrived late to the arena, had 20 points and five steals. He heard some boos from the crowd when he opted for a layup rather than a dunk on a breakaway in the third quarter.
"I just didn't have the momentum so I just laid it in," he said.
For the third time in four years, the midseason showcase came down to the closing moments. A free throw by Duncan tied it at 127-127 with 2:40 to go, but McGrady, who scored 13 points, sank a long jumper. O'Neal tied it again as he hurtled down the lane for a powerful dunk at the 1:57 mark as New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd ran for cover.
"I just went in and took it and took 2.9 steps and threw it down," O'Neal said.
"You've got to think about your family," Kidd said. "I don't know if he has an anti-lock brake system but I was just going to get out of the way."
McGrady made a nifty lefthanded drive and Bryant drilled a long jumper before McGrady gave the East its last lead at 132-131 by splitting a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left.
"It was a nail-biter at the end," Bryant said. "It was a good show."
The West had seven players in double figures, as did the East. Allen and Houston center Yao Ming scored 16 points each for the West, while Magloire and New Jersey Nets forward Kenyon Martin- each playing in his first All-Star Game - came off the bench to score 19 and 17 points, respectively.
O'Neal was highly entertaining. He took a couple of spins at point guard in the first half, having his drive swatted out of bounds by Magloire. He later responded by pounding a shot by Magloire into the seats.
"I had a lot of fun," O'Neal said. "A couple of people told me if I get it, there's an opening, they want me to go coast to coast."
In the third quarter, O'Neal scored 10 points on the court and countless points off it. One of his dunks rocked the backboard stanchion so severely it prompted referee Steve Javie to ask if there was an extra one in the building. Seconds later, he scored on a post move, grabbed a fan's video camera and turned it on himself, wiping his brow for effect.
NBA scoring leader Allen Iverson of Philadelphia, who came in with the highest average in All-Star Game history, became a passer, handing out 11 assists with just three points. He had a pair of long lobs that Toronto's Vince Carter turned into jaw-dropping dunks in the first quarter, which ended with the East holding a 33-31 lead.
