Perhaps it is personal, but there are certain dishes in China 🇨🇳 that I sort of grew up eating. However, they might have been taken for granted. For 1 thing, this recipe is actually Halal based.
U can ask, why is a Staple dish in Shanghai, Halal? But we have to remember, not everyone working in Shanghai was actually Chinese. So somehow, this specially designed Curried Beef Soup, infiltrated back into the culture of Shanghai. HaiPhong Road Temporary Market 海防道臨時街市 re-opens and that is where I used to have Kaya toast and beef balls after work.
The Food Hawker Bazaar used to be very packed and it has become much spacious with better ventilation after renovation. There are more than 10 food stalls 茶記 in the Hawker Bazaar, which are located at the 2 sides, and round tables, that all look the same but belong to different food stalls, are found at the centre of the bazaar. Choose the food stall first and then choose the corresponding table - the name of the food stall can be found on the table. Note that staff from different food stalls will give you their table once you enter the hawker centre and by the time you sit down, you realize that is not the food stall you want.
So what do I think about the food?
I chose Tak Fat Beef Balls 德發牛丸 - the restaurant I used to go before the renovation. The Kaya toast is good but I am quite disappointed with the beef balls with vermicelli 牛丸米. The vermicelli is quite raw (even I waited for 5 minutes before eating) and the soup has a light flavour. The beef balls has a dried tangerine skin 陳皮味taste which I expected beef balls with stronger beef taste.
If I come to the hawker centre again, I will still order the Kaya toast and probably try the fried pork chop vermicelli from another food stall (they look good, let you know how it tastes next time) and a cup of hot milk tea.

Introducing to you my favourite place for beef ball - 群記牛肉圓豬手(Kwan Kee restaurant).
Many comes to Kwan Kee for its beef balls, trotters and homemade chilli sauce (not to spicy even for people like me who does not eat spicy food)and you can always see a line outside the shop. The trotters are in limited supply (only a few rounds a day). We went there at 3:30 last week and the trotters are freshly made 👍🏻 While many like their trotters, I think the trotters are not as tender as expected. I like the beef balls much more. The pork trotters soup is the essence of both the trotters and the beef balls. Don’t forget to order a bottle of cream soda (not Sprite, not coke), perfect match with the beef balls.
One more thing... they use 花碼 (Fa Ma), the traditional SuZhou Numerals, but not the Arabic numbers to show the price of the food! This is very rare in Hong Kong now!

We love Kimchi Jjigae (also known as kimchi soup or stew in English). This soup is super easy to make and you just need to cook some rice to go with it and call it a day. So easy! A big shout-out to Lady Boss Choi of Hanwoori Korean restaurant in Singapore. This restaurant is in our neighbourhood and her kimchi jjigae is really really good. If you don't like seafood, you can also use shabu shabu pork belly or beef. You don't have to season the meat, just add them around the same time as we added the seafood.

Seafood Kimchi Jjigae 韩国海鲜泡菜汤 (Kimchi Soup / Stew)
Ingredients:
Serves 4 - 5 pax

1.5L water
6 tablespoons light soy sauce
4 cloves of chopped garlic
1 teaspoon grounded black pepper
6 tablespoons Korean chilli powder (gochugaru)
3 tablespoons gojuchang (Korean chilli paste)
450g kimchi
300g silken tofu
1 red onion - sliced
4 fresh shitake mushrooms - sliced
3 potatoes - sliced
50g sweet potato vermicelli (can be replaced with glass noodles)
2 stalks of spring onion (can be replaced with scallion)
1 teaspoon salt (season to taste)
200g prawns
200g baby octopus (can be replaced with squid)
300g venus clams
150g enoki mushrooms
Add some white vinegar at the end of the cooking if you like the soup to be more tangy.

材料:
牛柳半磅(切片)
韓式豉油1小碗
蜜糖1小碗
黑椒1湯匙
蒜茸1湯匙
麻油1湯匙
薑數片
芝麻適量
韓式粉絲1紮(先浸暖水1-2小時備用)
魚露/鹽1-2湯匙
洋葱1個
京葱1條
甘筍1條
雞髀菇、冬菇、蘑菇、金針菇(可隨個人喜好選擇菇類,素食版本只要不加牛肉即可)
韓式辣椒粉隨意(可以加多減少)
做法:
1.碗中加入切好牛柳,加入豉油、蒜茸、蜜糖、黑椒、麻油拌勻
2.小鍋內加入4杯水,煮滾加入洋葱、甘筍、京葱及醃好的牛柳
3.煮大概5分鐘,然後加入韓式粉絲及菇類,直至所有材料煮腍
4.期間可撇去泡沫
5.加入魚露調味
6.最後撒上芝麻
Korean Beef and Vermicelli Soup
Ingredients:
Beef tenderloin ½ lbs, sliced
Korean soy sauce 1 small bowl
Honey 1 small bowl
Black pepper 1 tbsp
Garlic 1 tbsp, minced
Sesame oil 1 tbsp
Ginger A few slices
Sesame Some
Korean vermicelli 1 bundle (soaked in warm water for 1-2 hours)
Fish sauce or salt 1-2 tbsp
Onion 1 pc
Leek 1 pc
Carrot 1 pcs
King oyster mushrooms According to personal preference
Shiitake mushrooms According to personal preference
Mushrooms According to personal preference
Enoki mushrooms According to personal preference
Korean chili flakes According to personal preference
Note: For a vegetarian version, just remove the beef from the recipe.
Steps:
1. In a bowl, add beef tenderloin slices, soy sauce, minced garlic, honey, black pepper, and sesame oil, mix well.
2. In a small pot, bring 4 cups of water to boil. Add onion, carrot, leek, and marinated beef tenderloin.
3. Cook for around 5 minutes, add Korean glass noodles and assorted mushrooms, cook until all ingredients are tender.
4. Meanwhile, remove any foam floating in soup.
5. Add fish sauce to taste.
6. Sprinkle sesame on top to finish.
