"Superstition would seem to be simply cowardice in regard to the supernatural." - Theophrastus (Θεόφραστος), in Characters, ch. 28 (16).
泰奧弗拉斯托斯是古希臘科學家和哲學家、柏拉圖和亞里士多德的學生。他原名 Tyrtamus (Τύρταμος)，Theophrastus 據說是亞里士多德幫他改的名字，有「神的代言人」的意思。他的研究領域涉及物理學、文學、哲學、邏輯學、倫理學等等，他甚至寫過關於植物學和石頭分類的書籍，是人類科學史上一位地位重要的科學家。他認為認識世界的方法是邏輯分析而非盲目迷信；他的上述引言體現了科學精神。
