Black Panther 導演悼念 Chadwick Bosemen 極度真摯的一封信。極度令人感動。What a great man. Calm, assured, always studying. Just like me.
Before sharing my thoughts on the passing of the great Chadwick Boseman, I first offer my condolences to his family who meant so very much to him. To his wife, Simone, especially.
I inherited Marvel and the Russo Brothers' casting choice of T'Challa. It is something that I will forever be grateful for. The first time I saw Chad's performance as T'Challa, it was in an unfinished cut of Captain America: Civil War. I was deciding whether or not directing Black Panther was the right choice for me. I'll never forget, sitting in an editorial suite on the Disney Lot and watching his scenes. His first with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, then, with the South African cinema titan, John Kani as T'Challa's father, King T'Chaka. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to make this movie. After Scarlett's character leaves them, Chad and John began conversing in a language I had never heard before. It sounded familiar, full of the same clicks and smacks that young black children would make in the States. The same clicks that we would often be chided for being disrespectful or improper. But, it had a musicality to it that felt ancient, powerful, and African.
In my meeting after watching the film, I asked Nate Moore, one of the producers of the film, about the language. "Did you guys make it up?" Nate replied, "That's Xhosa, John Kani's native language. He and Chad decided to do the scene like that on set, and we rolled with it." I thought to myself, "He just learned lines in another language, that day?" I couldn't conceive how difficult that must have been, and even though I hadn't met Chad, I was already in awe of his capacity as actor.
I learned later that there was much conversation over how T'Challa would sound in the film. The decision to have Xhosa be the official language of Wakanda was solidified by Chad, a native of South Carolina, because he was able to learn his lines in Xhosa, there on the spot. He also advocated for his character to speak with an African accent, so that he could present T'Challa to audiences as an African king, whose dialect had not been conquered by the West.
I finally met Chad in person in early 2016, once I signed onto the film. He snuck past journalists that were congregated for a press junket I was doing for "Creed," and met with me in the green room. We talked about our lives, my time playing football in college, and his time at Howard studying to be a director, about our collective vision for T'Challa and Wakanda. We spoke about the irony of how his former Howard classmate Ta-Nehisi Coates was writing T'Challa's current arc with Marvel Comics. And how Chad knew Howard student Prince Jones, who's murder by a police officer inspired Coates' memoir Between The World and Me.
I noticed then that Chad was an anomaly. He was calm. Assured. Constantly studying. But also kind, comforting, had the warmest laugh in the world, and eyes that seen much beyond his years, but could still sparkle like a child seeing something for the first time.
That was the first of many conversations. He was a special person. We would often speak about heritage and what it means to be African. When preparing for the film, he would ponder every decision, every choice, not just for how it would reflect on himself, but how those choices could reverberate. "They not ready for this, what we are doing…" "This is Star Wars, this is Lord of the Rings, but for us… and bigger!" He would say this to me while we were struggling to finish a dramatic scene, stretching into double overtime. Or while he was covered in body paint, doing his own stunts. Or crashing into frigid water, and foam landing pads. I would nod and smile, but I didn't believe him. I had no idea if the film would work. I wasn't sure I knew what I was doing. But I look back and realize that Chad knew something we all didn't. He was playing the long game. All while putting in the work. And work he did.
He would come to auditions for supporting roles, which is not common for lead actors in big budget movies. He was there for several M'Baku auditions. In Winston Duke's, he turned a chemistry read into a wrestling match. Winston broke his bracelet. In Letitia Wright's audition for Shuri, she pierced his royal poise with her signature humour, and would bring about a smile to T'Challa's face that was 100% Chad.
While filming the movie, we would meet at the office or at my rental home in Atlanta, to discuss lines and different ways to add depth to each scene. We talked costumes, military practices. He said to me "Wakandans have to dance during the coronations. If they just stand there with spears, what separates them from Romans?" In early drafts of the script. Eric Killmonger's character would ask T'Challa to be buried in Wakanda. Chad challenged that and asked, "What if Killmonger asked to be buried somewhere else?"
Chad deeply valued his privacy, and I wasn't privy to the details of his illness. After his family released their statement, I realised that he was living with his illness the entire time I knew him. Because he was a caretaker, a leader, and a man of faith, dignity and pride, he shielded his collaborators from his suffering. He lived a beautiful life. And he made great art. Day after day, year after year. That was who he was. He was an epic firework display. I will tell stories about being there for some of the brilliant sparks 'till the end of my days. What an incredible mark he's left for us.
I haven't grieved a loss this acute before. I spent the last year preparing, imagining and writing words for him to say, that we weren't destined to see. It leaves me broken knowing that I won't be able to watch another close-up of him in the monitor again or walk up to him and ask for another take.
It hurts more to know that we can't have another conversation, or Facetime, or text message exchange. He would send vegetarian recipes and eating regimens for my family and me to follow during the pandemic. He would check in on me and my loved ones, even as he dealt with the scourge of cancer.
In African cultures, we often refer to loved ones that have passed on as ancestors. Sometimes you are genetically related. Sometimes you are not. I had the privilege of directing scenes of Chad's character, T'Challa, communicating with the ancestors of Wakanda. We were in Atlanta, in an abandoned warehouse, with bluescreens, and massive movie lights, but Chad's performance made it feel real. I think it was because from the time that I met him, the ancestors spoke through him.
It's no secret to me now how he was able to skilfully portray some of our most notable ones. I had no doubt that he would live on and continue to bless us with more. But it is with a heavy heart and a sense of deep gratitude to have ever been in his presence, that I have to reckon with the fact that Chad is an ancestor now. And I know that he will watch over us, until we meet again.

This rare couple wefie taken at 12am last night reminds me of our pak tor days! It doesn't really look like we've aged 17 years although that is how long we have been together, yeah? 🤣 #自欺欺人
Anyway, we finally finally finally snuck out for a midnight movie after the kids were asleep. Let's see, which was likely our third one in the last decade? Haha. Guess that is why each one feels extra precious to us.
I had wanted to date him out since V Day and we finally made it happen last night because 天时地利人和. Kids were very cooperative too and didn't wake up when we were gone for that 2.5 hours - we had asked our in-laws to keep an ear out just in case the boy woke up and was devastated to find us missing.
There's nothing quite like the movie Parasite; and there's no one quite like this man who will love me unconditionally. Despite our differences and how we may never see eye to eye in many things, I am thankful to have you as my other half and the father of my kids in this journey. Occasional bickers only mean one thing - we care. 对吗? I would choose that than being two people who stopped talking and caring altogether. Even though we sometimes struggle as parents too, I think our kids are doing great lah, haha. #自我安慰
P.S. We came home immediately after the show because he had a bruised ankle and I am on a no--carb diet for now, so supper was out of the question. Haha. It was already 2:30am when we came out of the hall ley, so late! But it does remind me of the good old days when we would stay up nearly every night and chat, eat, play mj or party when we were in NTU Hall 6. Thanks for the night, dear!

False Theology Produces a Dead Assembly
““And to the angel of the assembly in Sardis write: “He who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars says these things: “I know your works, that you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and keep the things that remain, which you were about to throw away, for I have found no works of yours perfected before my God. Remember therefore how you have received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If therefore you won’t watch, I will come as a thief, and you won’t know what hour I will come upon you. Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.” (Revelation 3:1-6 WEB)
Jesus is the one who knows all things through the Holy Spirit who can be everywhere at the same time.
Jesus also holds the seven stars (each star represents a local church) in His hands—He knows exactly who is a true believer and who isn’t.
He is keenly aware of everything that goes on in the local churches all over the world.
The Sardis assembly had a reputation among men for being alive—perhaps they started with very dynamic worship and eloquent preachers.
However, somewhere along the way, the enemy managed to pervert their theology such that their teachings were no longer true and as a result, no one was getting saved.
Perhaps they stopped preaching about Jesus and transitioned to a message about morality and good works.
Maybe they taught that salvation is a progressive journey through obedience to the Law and one day becoming ‘holy enough’ to attain it.
Whatever it is, it wasn’t the Gospel—that we are saved by faith alone, in Jesus alone.
The word translated as “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which means an assembly of people.
In this case, the assembly in Sardis were a bunch of spiritually-dead people who came together for lively, exciting gatherings that did not result in salvation.
Only born-again believers are clothed in the white garments of righteousness.
Few were actually saved in the Sardis assembly.
Most were still spiritually-dead, probably thinking that morality and good works were the path to salvation.
Heretical cults like Gnosticism around that time believed that there was no such thing as sin, and only ignorance of knowledge. False teachers that taught this were just putting stumbling blocks in the way to hinder ignorant ones from salvation.
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5 WEB)
Dear brethren, many false religions have snuck in with the superficial appearance of Christianity, but are actually deceptions of the devil.
They have outward illusions of holiness and religiosity, but those who teach these are still dead in their sins.
“And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. It is no great thing therefore if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15 WEB)
At the end of the day, we are saved by faith in Jesus our Lord—the Son of God who became a Man to die as the perfect atoning sacrifice for all our sins.
He died, was buried and rose again on the third day and is now seated at the Father’s right hand, far above all principalities and powers.
Do you believe this and have you made Jesus your Lord?
If the answer is yes, your name is written in the Book of Life and will never be blotted out from it—you are eternally saved, lovingly protected in God’s mighty hands.
I hope you were blessed by the short message above. Have you read my book “Sandcastles Don’t Last Forever”? In it, you’ll receive revelations such as:
- What is the Book of Life and how predestination actually works (it doesn’t transgress our free will).
- What are eternal rewards and how do you maximize them for the best quality of life in eternity.
- The assuring and encouraging truth for believers about judgment before Jesus’ throne.
- Who is the coming Antichrist (letting Bible interpret the Bible) and how he will use the Mark of the Beast system to disqualify many from salvation during the Great Tribulation.
I believe the revelations within are very timely for the tail end of the end times that we are living in, and you will enjoy reading it over this Christmas season as we fix our eyes on Jesus again.

Nobody came close to scoring 50. The biggest shot in this game was the one that gave Allen Iverson 30.
Iverson nailed a three-pointer with 2:21 remaining to break the last tie, and the Philadelphia 76ers regained their poise and came up with enough of a balanced attack to beat the Toronto Raptors 84-79 Sunday.
"Nobody ever told me that winning a championship was easy, and I found out the hard way that isn't easy to win a playoff game," said Iverson, who shot 10-for-30 but came though in the clutch after Toronto had rallied from a 16-point deficit.
The 76ers evened the best-of-seven series at two games apiece and regained homecourt advantage heading into Game 5 Wednesday night.
All the news wasn't good, however, as starting small forward George Lynch fractured his left foot in the third quarter and will be out for the rest of the playoffs.
"It's disappointing because we've figured out what we need to do to stop the Raptors in this series -- we have to slow the ball down and get our defense set. We did that today and built a nice comfortable lead for most of the game," Lynch said.
The Sixers also played with the energy and determination that had been missing in Game 3, prompting them to call two players-only meetings to clear the air.
Aaron McKie, the NBA's sixth man of the year, moved into Philadelphia's starting lineup and had 18 points, five assists and five rebounds. He also spent almost the entire game defending Vince Carter, helping hold him to 25 points on 8-for-27 shooting.
Dikembe Mutombo bounced back from a poor Game 3 and had 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Sixers, who won despite Tyrone Hill being in foul trouble throughout the game and Lynch leaving late in the third quarter.
"I told them after the meeting that I wasn't worried at all about this game," Iverson said. "I really felt we were going to get this game, and I found out more about my teammates in this game."
Iverson wasn't at his best, shooting 3-for-12 in the second half, but he did hit the one shot that deflated the Raptors after they had spent so much time clawing their way back.
It was a straightaway three-pointer over Carter with 2:21 left that gave the Sixers an 81-78 lead.
"I couldn't make a shot in the second half, but I thought I could make that one and kind of turn things around for us, and fortunately I was able to hit it," Iverson said.
Said Eric Snow: "They had just tied the game and thought they had the momentum, but that was a big momentum-breaker right there."
Antonio Davis and Charles Oakley committed turnovers on Toronto's next two possessions, and Iverson hit Snow with a pass for an open jumper that put Philadelphia ahead 83-78 with 1:48 left.
This series had been marked by spectacular games by Iverson (54 points in Game 2) and Carter (50 in Game 3), but this one was more pedestrian. Iverson finished with 30, while Carter led Toronto with 25.
Davis added 15, Alvin Williams had 14 and Oakley had 11 rebounds and 11 rebounds to accompany a handful of mental errors -- the worst of which came when he dribbled the ball 50 feet upcourt with the clock ticking inside 50 seconds and Toronto trailing by four. Iverson came up behind him and stole the ball.
"I was going for the basket, but he snuck up behind me like a cornerback and made the interception," Oakley said.
McKie, who replaced Snow as a starter, scored 10 points in the third quarter to help keep Philadelphia in front. Lynch injured his left foot late in the same quarter when he stepped on Alvin Williams' foot. He was to undergo surgery Sunday night for a fractured fifth metatarsal.
The problem for the Raptors in the first half was their accuracy -- they managed to get open shots but couldn't put them down. Oakley missed all six of his shots in the half, and Toronto missed 10 in a row during the second quarter to drop their percentage to 22.2.
McKie scored Philadelphia's first eight points of the third quarter, and a three-point play by Mutombo off an offensive rebound gave the Sixers a 60-46 lead.
Oakley hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left that allowed Toronto to cut its deficit to 70-61 entering the fourth, and Carter opened the final quarter with a 3-pointer to make it a six-point game.
In most games, that would be when Iverson would start to take over. But Toronto sent double-teams at him and forced him to give the ball up, leading to two missed jumpers by Snow, a forced jumper by Iverson, an offensive goaltending violation and a missed 20-footer by Iverson on the Sixers' next five possessions.
Toronto pulled within three and twice missed chances to get closer, and a layup by Hill -- his first points of the game -- with 4:10 left gave the 76ers a 78-73 lead.
A tip-in by Carter, another missed jumper by Iverson and a 3-pointer by Childs allowed the Raptors to finally tie the game at 78-78 with 2:46 left. But Iverson immediately answered with a 3-pointer, and the Sixers held the lead the rest of the way.
