During our recent trip to JB, we went to San Lou Cafe (三楼咖啡屋) for lunch. Not the kind of cafe I had imagined, but a rather laid back eatery that serves really delicious zi-char dishes that are very affordable.
It’s a family-style restaurant and everyone here is very friendly. Before finding a table, we went into the kitchen to pick a fresh fish and decide on the cooking style. We ordered two fishes cooked in two different ways — steamed with preserved radish, and with assam.
The stir-fried clams here were probably the best I have tasted. They were slightly briny but very juicy and fresh. We also had omelette with fresh krill (small shrimps) and Sayur Manis.

1.培根蛋熱壓三明治
材料:
吐司 2片/ sliced bread 2pcs
培根 2片/ bacon 2pcs
雞蛋 1顆/eggs 1pcs
作法:
1. 三明治機預熱至變綠燈後,完後放入培根,蓋上蓋加熱約3分鐘。
2. 烤盤中放入吐司,擺上培根,再打入雞蛋、蓋上另一片吐司。
3. 蓋上蓋子,熱壓約5分鐘即可。
2.菜脯油條熱壓飯糰
材料:
白飯 適量/ steamed rice q.s.
蔥蛋 2片/ scallion omelette 2pcs
油條 2根/ fried bread stick 2pcs
菜脯 適量/ preserved radish q.s.
肉鬆 適量/ pork floss q.s.
作法:
1. 三明治機預熱至變綠燈後,在烤盤噴上適量油。
2. 烤盤上鋪上白飯,擺上蔥花蛋、油條、菜脯和肉鬆,再蓋上適量白飯。
3. 蓋上蓋子,熱壓約15分鐘至表面焦香有鍋巴即可。
3.熱壓肉片炒麵
材料:
五花肉片 4片/ pork belly slices 4pcs
油麵 適量/ alkaline noodle q.s.
市售照燒醬 適量/ teriyaki sauce q.s.
作法:
1. 三明治機先預熱至變綠燈。
2. 三明治烤盤先擺上2片五花肉片,放上油麵、再蓋上2片五花肉片。
3. 蓋上蓋子,熱壓約6分鐘即可。
4.蜂蜜水果鬆餅
材料:
A
中筋麵粉 100公克 plain flour 100g
低筋麵粉 100公克 low gluten flour 100g
泡打粉 2茶匙 baking powder 2tsp.
糖 30公克 sugar 30g
鹽 1/2茶匙 salt 1/2tsp.
水 200ml water 200ml
橄欖油 2大匙 olive oil 2tbsp.
雞蛋 1顆 egg 1pcs
B
綜合水果 適量/fruit q.s.
蜂蜜 適量/honey q.s.
作法
1. 粉類過篩,再將所有材料混合均勻。
2. 麵糊靜置20分鐘。(小標:麵糊靜置一下,烤後更漂亮)
3. 三明治機預熱至變綠燈,倒入麵糊,蓋上蓋子烤約8分鐘。
4. 擺上水果丁、淋上蜂蜜搭配食用即可。
5.泡菜年糕鬆餅
材料:

切片年糕 適量/ rice cake q.s.
B
泡菜 適量/ kimchi q.s.
五花肉片 適量/ pork belly slices q.s.
作法:
1. 三明治烤盤擺入泡菜和五花肉,蓋上蓋子加熱約4分鐘,烤熟後取出。
2. 年糕泡熱水1分鐘至軟後瀝乾備用。
3. 鬆餅烤盤噴上適量油,擺上切片年糕,蓋上蓋子,熱壓約5分鐘。
4. 年糕上擺上泡菜五花肉即可。
6.熱壓奶油小餐包
材料:
奶油小餐包 1個/bun 1pcs
果醬 適量/jam q.s.
作法:
1. 鬆餅烤盤上擺上奶油小餐包,蓋上蓋子熱壓約4分鐘。
2. 取出後搭配果醬食用即可。

Carrot cake is one of our favourite Singapore hawker food (street food). Contrary to its name, Singapore carrot cake does not have carrots in them. It’s usually served in black or white version. To be honest, we have difficulty deciding which one we prefer but usually we order the black one - so which one is your favourite? If you’re not Asian, you’ll probably be somewhat confused by the name of this dish with the other carrot cake that’s served as a dessert (real cake cake) because we are also confused when we see that carrot cake (real cake cake). LOL! We like to order dish as a side to go with our main dishes whenever we eat at hawker centres. Try this recipe and let us know what you think. Happy cooking!

2 tablespoons of cornflour
½ teaspoon of salt
250ml of water
1 tablespoon of cooking oil

125ml of water (add after mixing the flour mixture with the white radish)

White carrot cake

2 cloves of chopped garlic
2 teaspoons of sweet preserved radish
2 teaspoons of salty preserved radish
250g of steamed carrot cake
3 teaspoons of light soy sauce
3 beaten eggs
A few dashes of white pepper
Some chopped spring onion

Black carrot cake
-----------------------------------
2 cloves of chopped garlic
2 teaspoons of sweet preserved radish
2 teaspoons of salty preserved radish
250g of steamed carrot cake
1 teaspoon of light soy sauce
