1986年4月26日，#車諾比核電廠 的事故（Chernobyl nuclear disaster）引起全球的關注，這場意外發生於蘇聯 #烏克蘭蘇維埃社會主義共和國 之 #普里皮亞季市，市內的核電廠發生 #核子反應爐 破裂事故，該事故是歷史上最嚴重的核電事故，也是首例被國際核事件分級表評為最高 #第七級事件 的特大事故。
事故的主因是反應爐進行緊急停機後的後備供電測試時，因操作人員的訓練不足，最終使功率急劇增加，破壞反應爐。
當時在一連串的失誤下，車諾比核電廠的 #4號核子反應爐 功率在短時間內災難性地激增至最大設計負荷的10倍以上，最終導致 #蒸汽爆炸，衝破反應爐的頂部。
事發後，4號核子反應爐 #爐心 立即直接暴露於大氣中，釋放出大量的放射性微粒和氣態殘骸，隨後空氣中的氧氣與超高溫核心中的1700噸可燃性 #石墨 減速劑接觸，燃著的石墨減速劑加速了放射性粒子的洩漏，#放射性粒子 隨風跨越了國界。
這次災難所釋放出的放射線劑量是第二次世界大戰時，#廣島原子彈爆炸 的400倍以上。被核能放射線塵污染的雲層飄往眾多地區，包括前蘇聯西部的部分地區、西歐、東歐、斯堪地那維亞半島、不列顛群島和 #北美 東部部分地區。
當年，近 #35萬 名居民被迫撤離、再也回不去自己的家園。前蘇聯官方的報告表示，約60％受到放射線塵污染的地區皆位於白俄羅斯境內。經濟上，這場災難總共損失約 #2000億 美元，是近代歷史中代價最大的災難。
#國際原子能總署 在2005年所提出的 #車諾比事件報告 中，記述這場意外直接造成共56人死亡，並估算暴露在高度放射線物質的人高達 #60萬 人，額外有4000人死於癌症，無數的人健康一輩子受到影響。
這起事故後來被改編為《#核爆家園》，本片重現了許多當年真實人物的故事，透過深入淺出的方式，以最真實的狀況重現真實事件始末，不僅讓人見證當年的各種 #荒謬行徑，以及政府 #欲蓋彌彰 的卑劣，整個製作規模和架構都非常完美。
而事故發生的普里皮亞特，如今也成了一座 #死城，但近年興起的 #核災觀光，有愈來愈多人回到此地，在有限度的狀況下旅行。
