其實我都看不懂
This is not my work, but isn’t it amazing?!
On Sundays growing up I had Chinese school at Tzu-Chi, and I took calligraphy as my elective most years. Chinese school itself was a bit difficult for me because speaking and reading ability were assumed, and we continued to study highly-specific vocab, folktales, and fables (which I called “weird animal stories”). My classmates were all ABCs who spoke mostlt Chinese at home with their parents, and the teacher was always one of their moms. In my situation, the only time I’d practice outside of school was with my mom (who immigrated to the states when she was in junior high) while shopping at Super Target or whatever to say things I didn’t want others to understand, since the only thing my dad knows how to say in Chinese is “chocolate milk.” Calligraphy was good for me because it’s artistic and I knew that the quality of my Chinese handwriting made me seem much, much more literate than I was...might as well see what I could do with that (lol). I entered a citywide Chinese calligraphy competition in high school and got second place!
Living in Taiwan has made me much more confident in my Chinese ability, but after seeing this last night I got a little nostalgic. Going to set aside some time this week to get my 書法 back on, baby!
What’s something you enjoyed doing while growing up that but haven’t done in awhile? @ 松山文創園區 SCCP Taipei

【英語字幕】OK. So when I was in junior high school, I lived in Kanazawa. Every junior high school has at least one native speaker to teach the students real English, and my junior high school was really small but there was one native speaker. I think he was an American teacher. His name was Bob. I think he was from the state of Minnesota. And I really liked that guy. I really liked him. He was a big man like American, and he made me curious about the life in America cuz we didn't have internet back then. So on his last day of his teaching term, I wanted to tell him, I wanted to say thank you to him. Actually I wanted to say more than just thank you. So the night before his last day, I was reading a dictionary, trying to come up with something to say to him. And I still remember it was "I had a good time with you". That was the phrase. And so the next day, very first in the morning, I went to teachers' room, and I found Bob sitting at his desk. And I came up to him and said "Good morning Bob. I had a good time with you. Thank you." But I wasn't sure what I said would make sense. But this big guy Bob, all of a sudden, put a big smile on his face, and said "I had a good time with you too. We're friends now.", and we shook hands. I was really happy. I was really happy to realize... first of all, I was so happy that my English made sense. And that's the time, that's the moment I realized how powerful a language is. How much a single phrase moves a person. So after that moment, English wasn't just a study for me. It was more like... it was more something human.
