The big girl has been sharing with me about her aspirations and it seems like she has given a lot of thought to it in the last few months.
Being the insect and nature lover that she is since young, she says she is determined to be an entomologist when she grows up. She even wrote it in her chinese journal in school and told her teacher that she wants to be a 昆虫学者.
If that doesn't work out, then she wants to be a navy officer like Papa or a stay home mum like Mama. Her backup plans also include being a dancer, singer, actor or magician because these are the things she likes to do. Haha.
I don't know if I was being too blunt when I told her that you can dream about being anyone you want to be, but when reality sets in, you will realise that things might be a little different from how you imagine them to be. So, it's okay for aspirations to change along the way because she still has a lot to discover about this world. Nonetheless, I assured her that whatever her dream may be, we will support her and wish that she will have the courage, strength and passion to pursue it.
Then she asked me what my ambition was as a kid and I think I had a few - Author, Teacher and Mum. I can't say I didn't achieve them when I look back now because I do teach (and nag) on a daily basis and being a blogger is the closest thing I can be to being a writer and of course, I became a mum thrice.
She thought about it for a while and then said "Can an entomologist earn money?" and I told her not to think about the pay but focus on her passion. In any case, we don't want and don't need her to support us next time.
And she said "But you all raised me and brought me to this world. It's only right for me to 养你 when you are old."
Awww. 有你这句话就够了。你想当什么，尽管去当。你想做什么，放胆去做。No dream is too big and no dreamer is too small, so go on and live your dream, my dear. 我们会一直支持你的.
P.S. It's a real butterfly there and she didn't want to sweep it away for fear of hurting it. She totally loves all kinds of insects, even creepy crawlies that irk most people. Got the makings of an entomologist, hor?
