3. Biden
It’s exploitation,” ... “Without healthy competition, big players can change and charge whatever they want, and treat you however they want. And for too many Americans that means accepting a bad deal for things that you can’t go without.”
("Tariffs are taxes on consumers. In some cases it seems to me what we did hurt American consumers, ...")
(1906 advertisement “Six-room house and bath, with 2 additional rooms in basement having fire-places, nicely furnished; fine piano; … $45.")
("...as aging populations in China and other nations spend more of their savings, average interest rates will rise higher than governments have bargained for...China’s greatest contribution to global growth is now past. This great demographic reversal will lead to a return of inflation.”)
(Foreign governments owned US$7.053 trillion of US debt in November, including China's US$1.063 trillion, and Japan's US$1.260 trillion, US Treasury data showed. )

DWWA has a track record of shining a spotlight on exciting, under-the-radar wines all over the wine world, too – and 2021 proved no exception.
DWWA 2021: A year of firsts
DWWA 2021 included a first Best in Show medal for a ‘Vin Jaune’ – or ‘yellow wine’ – a speciality of the Jura region of eastern France. The winning wine was Domaine Berthet-Bondet, Château-Chalon 2013, made from 100% Savagnin.
DWWA 2021 judges included in their tasting notes, “If you’ve never tried Vin Jaune, you couldn’t do better than begin with this 2013.
“Pale but emphatically gold, it has aromas which evoke nuts, wild mushrooms, umami, yeast and cream, but in which some lingering sweetness of fruit survives, too (Savagnin for Vin Jaune is picked very ripe).”
There was also success in Switzerland for the Savagnin grape variety, not to be confused with the similarly named Sauvignon Blanc.
Wine cooperative St. Jodern Kellerei in the Valais region already farms some of Europe’s highest vineyards, and it reached the summit of DWWA in 2021 after its ‘Heida Barrique’ 2019 won a Best in Show medal.
Judges said in their notes on the wine, “Heida is the name used in the high Valais (or Wallis) for Savagnin, and our judges were very impressed by the range and expressive uniqueness of Swiss Savagnin this year.”
They added, “This is a refreshingly aromatic yet full-flavoured wine, striking and singular: a horn sounding in the clear Alpine air.”
DWWA 2021 also saw a first Best in Show medal for France’s Savoie region, awarded to a 100%
Roussanne white wine from Domaine Charles Gonnet for the 2020 vintage.
Friuli in north-east Italy made its debut in the DWWA Best in Show winners’ list, thanks to Muzic winery’s Stare Brajde ‘Collio’ 2019 white wine.
There were also two Golds for Ukraine, the first time the country has struck Gold at DWWA.
Sarah Jane Evans, Co-Chair at DWWA 2021, said of the results, “You know that this is something that's been through a really rigorous judging process. We're not playing at judging here. This is blind tasting.
We have absolutely no idea what the wines are and we're tasting them not only in panels together where we have to each discuss and think about them deeply, but then they go up to Regional Chairs who are experts in those countries.”
She added, “It's a very, very rigorous process, but it highlights fabulous wines at the end of it.”
Andrew Jefford, also a DWWA Co-Chair, said, “DWWA is the world's leading wine competition. I'm absolutely thrilled to take part in it every year because having tasted in a number of other competitions I know how well it's organised, how carefully everything is done. So if you get a medal from DWWA it really is worth having and everybody respects it internationally. We get entries from every corner of the wine world, so it is as it were the closest you can get to a universal benchmark.”
More highlights from DWWA 2021
Noteworthy highlights include two Best in Show medals for German Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, showcasing the country’s ability to make top wines with these classic Burgundian grape varieties. A 2011-vintage English sparkling wine also won a Best in Show medal.
In terms of more unexpected wins, in North America, there was a Gold medal for a New York Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon blend produced in the North Fork of Long Island AVA, while in Canada Niagara Peninsula winery Hidden Bench won a Best in Show medal for its Felseck Vineyard Chardonnay 2018.
Russia won its second ever Platinum medal, while wines from Japan won two Platinums and four Gold medals.
Classic styles from well-known areas also performed extremely well at DWWA 2021, demonstrating why they enjoy such vaunted reputations among wine lovers.
The list of Best in Show medals includes Champagne, California Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, Barossa Valley Shiraz and Margaret River Chardonnay from Australia, Rioja Gran Reserva from the lauded 2004 vintage, South African Cabernet Sauvignon, Vinho Verde from Portugal and Malbec from Argentina.
Excitement surrounding the Barolo 2016 vintage in Italy’s Piedmont region was given a further boost after Diego Morra’s ‘Monvigliero’ 2016 was awarded a Best in Show medal.
In total, Italy won seven Best in Show medals, also including Prosecco and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG wines, as well as a Timorasso dry white from Piedmont and a Vin Santo di Carmignano sweet wine from Tuscany.
Some Best in Show awards went to lesser-known styles from top producer nations. New Zealand is renowned for Sauvignon Blanc but it was Tohu’s ‘Whenua Matua’ Chardonnay 2018 that won a Best in Show medal at DWWA 2021. Chile’s La Causa, Cinsault-País-Carignan 2019 from Itata Valley also received this top accolade.
Elsewhere, Greece narrowly beat its strong performance at last year’s competition. A Greek Assyrtiko white wine won a Best in Show medal, and the country received six Platinum and 16 Gold medals at DWWA 2021 overall.

🇺🇸 Let’s start with the big picture. Who are the main U.S. adversaries in 2030?
None of our main competitors—Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, and terrorist groups—are going away, and some of them will probably strengthen. China will become a more formidable threat as its economic and military influence increases. We're not going to have the same freedom of movement that we have with China now.
1. a more formidable threat
2. freedom of movement
★★★★★★★★★★★
🇺🇸 How do you see the global economic picture changing?
The United States and its allies are going to lose some of their share of global economic output. China is growing, and growing at the expense of our allies, particularly the Europeans. If you think about economics as the underlying bedrock that allows you to produce military capabilities, that trend is the opposite of what you want to see.
3. global economic output
4. at the expense of 以……為代價
5. the underlying bedrock
6. military capabilities
★★★★★★★★★★★★
🇺🇸 How will environmental change play into this?
First, it will have an effect on where we can base. Some of our installations around the world are in places that will be threatened by climate change—they're in low-lying areas or flood plains, for example. But second, it also will have a destabilizing effect. Some of the places that will be hardest hit by droughts or rising sea levels tend to have weaker governments. That could increase domestic instability, and more domestic instability can lead to terrorism and civil war, the kind of sub-state conflict that we've been dealing with for the last decade or so.
7. base (v.)
9. low-lying areas
10. flood plains
11. a destabilizing effect
12. be hard hit by… 受到……的重創
13. increase domestic instability
14. lead to 導致
15. sub-state conflict
★★★★★★★★★★★★
🇺🇸 What role will domestic politics in the United States play?
We've seen a steady trend over the last several decades toward increasing polarization among the U.S. electorate. That creates some significant constraints. Just to get the defense bill passed requires a bipartisan consensus, and that will face increasing pressure in the years to come. We're also seeing a second major trend, which is a growing push to retrench, to pull the U.S. back from a global posture.
16. a steady trend
17. increasing polarization
18. the U.S. electorate
19. a bipartisan consensus
20. retrenchment strategy
★★★★★★★★★★★★
🇺🇸 What should the United States be doing to prepare for 2030?
We probably need more longer-range platforms, for example, but there's really no silver bullet. The bigger finding is that the United States is going to increasingly face a grand-strategic choice. It can double down on its role for the last three decades as the world's leading superpower, in which case it needs to spend more on defense and defense capabilities than it has.
21. longer-range platforms
22. face a grand-strategic choice
23. double down on sth
24. the world's leading superpower
25. defense capabilities

[HAS MCDONALD'S CONQUERED ASIA?]
If McDonald's were a country, it's revenue would make it the 105th largest economy in the world, surpassing the GDP of Estonia, Cambodia & Afghanistan.
The number of McDonald's employees worldwide would be more than the entire population of Iceland, Barbados and Samoa.
It's a big company, but it wasn't always that way.
McDonald's was founded on May 15th, 1940 in San Bernardino, California - that's over 77 years ago - and has since expanded to a 120 countries and territories around the world, serving 68 million customers each day.
It took 27 years for the first McDonald's to appear outside of the US, and 31 years to make it's way to a second continent.
THIS continent was Asia, and in this video I'm going to take you through the next 46 years of McDonald's' Asian ascension.
So, which Asian country was the FIRST to open a McDonald's? What did McDonalds have to sacrifice in order compete with local markets? And how much of Asia is there still left to conquer, as of today?
We'll get into all of that, so grab a double cheeseburger (maybe some fries), and we'll explore every Asian country to have ever had a McDonald's.
Welcome to McAsia.
Some notable McDonald's branches in Asian countries are:
- McDonald's Japan for being the first Asian McDonald's ever.
- McDonald's Singapore for having the oldest McDonald's employee worldwide at 93 years old.
- McDonald's Malaysia for being the first McDonald's in a Muslim-majority country.
- McDonald's Turkey for being the first McDonald's in West Asia (Middle East).
- McDonald's South Korea to be the first to sell alcohol (beer).
- McDonald's Russia for having the largest McDonald's outlet in Asia in Pushkin Square, Moscow.
- McDonald's Israel for having the healthiest McDonald's in the world.
- McDonald's Saudi Arabia for oddly taking out a full page ad in a Saudi national newspaper swearing loyalty to the new crown prince.
- McDonald's India for being the first McDonald's in South Asia, as well as having the first vegetarian McDonald's in the world.
- McDonald's Pakistan for having served the Taliban at one point in time.
- McDonald's Georgia for having the chain's most exquisite outlet.
- McDonald's Iraq for only having ONE McDonald's outlet for the US Army stationed in Baghdad.
- McDonald's Kazakhstan for being the first McDonald's in Central Asia.

Matryoshka dolls are one of the most known symbols of Russian culture and by no means a super cute idea for a costume if you want to stand out at an event or party! In this tutorial I'll show you how you can easily transform into a big eyed russian doll with tiny lips, step by step.
CONTACT LENSES
Aviory iFairy♥Green♥⌀16.00mm → http://www.speciallens.com/ifairy-avior-green-contact-lenses/
For those big round eyes, I'm going to put in circle lenses. However, this is optional and the makeup will look dolly also without em!
SKIN
Get a good camouflage cream that is a tad bit lighter than your skin and apply under your eyes, nose, forehead and chin. This is to conceal and highlight at once! Make sure you cover all dull and dark spots. We need to get our skin matt and even.
Now get your normal day to day liquid base foundation and apply a sheer layer over your face to even out the colour and doll up your complexion!
Since this base makeup is quite thick, let it set for 3-5 minutes. Finish with light dabs of sheer powder so you don't disturb the colour and texture of the foundation.
EYES
Luckily, The eye makeup looks more elaborate than it actually is. Wet an eyeshadow brush and create a white base over your lid. For the colour white, I recommend to use a high pigmented eye shadow but if you don't have one then just apply 2 or 3 layers more, but give the layers at least 1 minute time to dry.
With a dry brush, apply copper up to your brow bone. Colour one third of your lower lid, too. Now, with the same colour but using a WET brush, mark your brow bone. Colours applied with a wet brush come out more intense. The stroke doesn't have to be perfect as long as you're following the natural shape of your brow bone.
On a dry angled brush, apply a dark chocolate colour and draw over the line on your brow bone. Make the end of the stroke end faintly by smudging it slightly.
Wet the brush once again and apply a finishing layer of copper.
EYELASHES
Matryoshka dolls have long eyelashes, emphasising their youth and femininity.
Apply dark and dramatic, or even theatrical under eye lashes. Glue them from the middle of your eye up to your brow bone.
Now we'll need long upper eyelashes with a flexible lash band, Stick them on your eye lid, close to the crease. Don't blink until the glue has completely dried!
Enlarging your eyes this dramatically will probably get your brows out of proportion, so make sure to elongate them as well!
One thing almost all Russian dolls have in common are their delicate, teeny tiny rosebud lips. Wet a small brush, choose the most intense scarlet in your makeup box, and with great care, follow your lip's silhouette. Let the brush slip at your mouths corner to create a wing so it looks like you're smiling. But if you're not in the mood, you can let the wings point downwards and be a grumpy matryoshka instead! :)
Pat the same colour you used for your lips on your cheek apples and blend until there are no clear edges to be recognised.
HAIR
If your hair is long then this style will be super simple. Just twist a braid for each side of your hair. Pull the ends up to the top of your head and fix all areas well with bobby pins.
All that's left to do now is to cover your head with a shawl and tie a ribbon! Here I'm wearing a real Russian hand painted Pavlovo shawl like a real babushka! Other patterns I recommend for the Russian doll look are POLKA DOT, LACE or a simple red scarve looks cute too! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and maybe you're ready to start your own transformation into a cute matryoshka!
