Daily advice for HK immigrants to the West:
If you decide to buy into an area of small lots but big houses (a favorite buying habit of many ethic Chinese whether from Taiwan, HK or the mainland), don’t make a big fuss. People from HK tend to speak louder than average compared to western standards, partly due to living in a crowded and competitive city (sometimes, New Yorkers are the same). With your house being so close to your neighbors, your “foreign” language could be quite the bother. Westerners don’t enjoy hearing a language they don’t know. Many Brits can speak French. You may try to converse in French, if you want to speak loudly. In most upper crest neighborhoods, this sort of big noise production is usually frowned upon. They may not tell you to your face, but you’re not going to be a welcome guest either. Racism may have nothing to do with it, but decorum does. This same advice will also apply when you go out in public. I’m not saying you can’t speak in your native tongue. Of course, you can, but do so quietly and respectfully. The Japanese often keep it down, when they converse in Japanese in a foreign place. Be a bit more like them.
