If you want to be an amazing Tarot reader who has a real impact in your clients’ lives, then it’s essential you know one thing – how to tell the story in the cards.
Today, I’m going to share with you 3 simple techniques to tell the story in your Tarot reading.
1. The Story in the Card
It’s pretty obvious, I know, but if you want to tell the story in your Tarot reading, start by telling the story in the card.
Every Tarot card contains its own unique story and that story will help us to understand the overall story of the reading and ultimately, what’s going on in our lives (or our client’s).
Let’s work through an example. Ask the Tarot, “What do I need to know right now?” and draw 2 cards.
For each card, describe what you see. Are there people in the card? What are they doing? What objects do you see? Why do you think they are there? What’s in the background? What’s in the foreground? How do all of these different elements come together into a coherent story?
I drew the Ace of Swords and the Six of Swords.
In the Ace, I see a hand holding a sword up high with a crown at the tip. The story I might tell is that with truth and clarity of mind there is success. Sure, there are mountains in the background – a sign of future challenges – but it doesn’t matter right now because life is good and the potential for success is high.
In the Six of Swords, I see a woman and child in a boat. A man rows the boat across a body of water to a faraway land. To me, the story here is that after a period of success (what we saw in the Ace of Swords), it no longer met the needs of the family and so now there is a reluctant move to a new location or a new way of life. Even with success, there can still be change particularly if the success is no longer aligned with what’s truly important.
Why not try it out for yourself? Tell the story in each card, and then combine those two stories to create the overall story for the reading.
2. Directionality
Many cards in the Rider Waite Tarot deck (and most other decks) feature people. But did you know that the way in which they face and interact with each other can be very revealing of the ‘story’ behind a Tarot reading?
Let’s say you’re doing a relationship Tarot reading. You place a card on the left, representing you, and a card on the right, representing the other person. Now, if there are people in the two cards, take a look at how those people interact with each other.
To show you how this works, I randomly drew the Six of Pentacles and the Four of Pentacles.
The man in the Six is looking away to the left as he helps the two beggars kneeling at his feet, while the man in the Four is facing front on.
One possible story here is that your attention has been taken away from the relationship and instead you are more focused on helping other people in need. Or, perhaps you’re giving away money and resources that were meant for the relationship but are now going elsewhere.
For the other person in the relationship, they’re ready to give the relationship the attention it deserves as the figure in the Four of Pentacles faces front on. What’s interesting, though, is that the man in this card is not looking over towards you, so he/she may not fully understand or agree with what you’re doing when you’re focused on helping others.
It certainly makes for an interesting story, hey?
So why not give it a go? Think of a relationship that’s important to you and draw two cards – one for you, and one for the other person. Take a look at the way in which the people interact with each other and start to tell the story about what that signifies in the relationship.
3. Flow
Looking for ‘flow’ across Tarot cards is a beautiful and fun technique for telling the story in a Tarot reading.
I typically look for what is common between the cards – common symbols, colours, people, people’s stances or positions, elements (air, water, etc.), backgrounds and so on. Then, I look for how those common elements change or ‘evolve’ between the cards and what this tells me about the situation at hand.
Let me give you an example. I randomly drew two cards – the Nine of Swords and the Five of Cups.
Look at both of the figures in the cards – both have their head down and both appear to be grieving some sort of loss. What’s more, in the Nine of Swords, it is night time (the dark background), and in the Five of Cups, it is day time.
To me, the ‘story’ here is that grief, sorrow and disappointment is inescapable – it’s a part of every waking (and sleeping) hour of this person’s life. And clearly this is not a sustainable way of living.
You might also notice other patterns of ‘flow’ across these two cards. What do these patterns tell you about this situation?
Over to You
You’ve now got 3 simple yet powerful techniques that you can use to tell the story and create an amazingly insightful Tarot reading. Go ahead and try them out, then let me know how you go by leaving a comment below.

Catcher
Travis d’Arnaud had a solid season for Atlanta, hitting 18 home runs with 60 RB
Is and a .791 OPS in 107 games. The 33-year-old is making his fifth postseason a
ppearance and third straight with the Braves, for whom he posted an .875 OPS wit
h two homers in last year’s World Series. d’Arnaud also ranked third in the Ma
jors in pitch framing in 2022, giving him great value behind the plate.
J.T. Realmuto posted an .820 OPS with 22 homers and 84 RBIs in the regular seaso
n, leading all big league catchers with a 6.5 fWAR. Playing in his first postsea
son, Realmuto went 1-for-6 with two walks in the Phillies’ two-game Wild Card S
eries sweep of the Cardinals.

First base
Matt Olson hasn’t caused Braves fans to forget about Freddie Freeman, but the 2
8-year-old had an excellent debut season for Atlanta. Olson hit 34 home runs wit
h a team-high 103 RBIs during the regular season, playing all 162 games.
Rhys Hoskins was just as durable this season, hitting 30 homers with 79 RBIs in
156 games. Playing in his first postseason, Hoskins went 0-for-9 with three stri
keouts against St. Louis in the NL Wild Card Series.
Advantage: Braves

Second base
Orlando Arcia played well while filling in for the injured Ozzie Albies, hitting
nine home runs with 30 RBIs and a .733 OPS in 68 games. Arcia had only five pla
te appearances in last year’s postseason, but he thrived in his three Octobers
with the Brewers, posting an .879 OPS with four home runs in 13 games. Arcia sho
uld get the bulk of the starts in the NLDS, though rookie Vaughn Grissom could s
tart against lefty Ranger Suárez.
Jean Segura’s regular season was interrupted by injury, as he hit 10 homers wit
h 33 RBIs in 98 games. After a decade and more than 1,300 games in the Majors, t
he 32-year-old is finally getting his first crack at the postseason. While he we
nt just 1-for-5 against St. Louis, that one hit keyed Philadelphia’s Game 1 com
eback win.

Shortstop
Dansby Swanson was an All-Star for the first time this season, hitting 25 home r
uns with 96 RBIs, 99 runs scored and a .776 OPS while playing all 162 games. The
impending free agent struggled during the first two rounds of the postseason la
st fall, but he hit a pair of homers in the World Series against the Astros, bri
nging his postseason career home run total to five.
Bryson Stott had his ups and downs during his rookie season, showing flashes of
power (10 home runs) despite a subpar slash line (.234/.295/.358) in 127 games.
The 25-year-old went 0-for-4 in the Wild Card Series, though he drew three walks
and drove in an insurance run in the Phillies’ wild Game 1 comeback win.
Advantage: Braves
Third base
Austin Riley should earn some NL MVP votes after leading the Braves in home runs
(38) and OPS (.878) this season. Riley homered in each of the first two rounds
in last year’s postseason, posting a .908 OPS in the NLDS against the Brewers.
Alec Bohm hit 13 home runs with 72 RBIs and a .713 OPS in 152 games this season,
ranking 34th out of 36 qualified third basemen in Outs Above Average (-8). Bohm
was 2-for-5 with two walks in this year’s Wild Card Series, belting a pair of
doubles.
Advantage: Braves
Left field
Eddie Rosario should get the nod against the Phillies’ righties, though Robbie
Grossman could start against Suárez in Game 1. Rosario will be looking to make
up for a difficult regular season marred by vision problems and inconsistency, h
oping to find the October magic that helped him win NLCS MVP honors a year ago.
Kyle Schwarber led the NL with 46 home runs, though he also paced the Majors wit
h 200 strikeouts. Schwarber -- who was 0-for-7 with two RBIs in the Wild Card Se
ries -- has played in the postseason in seven of his eight years in the Majors,
posting an .823 OPS with nine homers and 19 RBIs in 37 postseason games.
Advantage: Phillies
Center field
Michael Harris II had an impressive debut season that should land him NL Rookie
of the Year honors, as he slashed .297/.339/.514 with 19 homers, 64 RBIs and 20
stolen bases in 114 games. The 21-year-old Harris also displayed tremendous defe
nse; his 7 Outs Above Average was tied for eighth-best in the Majors among cente
r fielders.
Brandon Marsh was an under-the-radar acquisition this summer, especially after p
osting a .637 OPS in 93 games with the Angels to open the season. Since joining
the Phillies, Marsh -- who was 2-for-5 in the Wild Card series -- has a .774 OPS
in 41 games, helping solidify the position for Philadelphia.
Advantage: Braves
Right field
Ronald Acuña Jr. wasn’t a part of the World Series run last fall thanks to a t
orn ACL, but the 24-year-old returned to All-Star form this season. Acuña hit 1
5 homers with 50 RBIs and 29 steals in 119 games, though his .764 OPS was well s
hort of his .925 mark through the first four years of his career.
Nick Castellanos’ first season in Philadelphia did not go particularly well for
the slugger, who managed just 13 homers, 62 RBIs and a .694 OPS in 136 games. H
is Wild Card Series didn’t go any better; Castellanos was 0-for-7 with a walk a
gainst the Cardinals.
Advantage: Braves
Starting pitching
After earning the first-round bye, the Braves have the advantage of lining up th
eir rotation. Max Fried and Kyle Wright won 35 games between them in 2022, formi
ng one of the best 1-2 punches in the league. Rookie Spencer Strider was very im
pressive in his 131 2/3 innings (86 hits, 202 strikeouts, 2.67 ERA), but a left
oblique injury cut his September short. If Strider is available, it could be as
an opener-type starter. Veteran Charlie Morton -- who has two World Series rings
and a 3.35 ERA in 17 career postseason outings -- should start Game 3 or 4.
The Phillies started Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola in their Wild Card Series sweep
of the Cardinals, as the two combined for 13 shutout innings. Now they won’t b
e able to start until Games 2 and 3, leaving the Game 1 start to Ranger Suárez,
who posted a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts this season. A Game 4 start could go to Noah
Syndergaard or Bailey Falter.
Advantage: Braves
Designated hitter
Marcell Ozuna served as Atlanta’s DH in the final two games of the Braves’ big
series against the Mets last week, so he’s likely to see most of the action in
the NLDS. William Contreras -- who had a 1.036 OPS against lefties in the regul
ar season -- should get the nod in Game 1 against Suárez.
Bryce Harper is playing in his fifth postseason, though the Wild Card Series vic
tory over the Cardinals was his first-ever postseason series win. Harper was 2-f
or-7 with a home run against St. Louis, helping erase the frustration of his inj
ury-plagued season in which he hit 18 homers with an .878 OPS in 99 games.
Advantage: Phillies

Bullpen
Kenley Jansen led the NL with 41 saves this season, his first in Atlanta. The cl
oser has pitched well in his nine postseasons with the Dodgers, posting a 2.13 E
RA and 19 saves in 57 playoff appearances. Raisel Iglesias has been nearly unhit
table since being acquired by the Braves at the Trade Deadline, allowing one ear
ned run in 28 appearances for a minuscule 0.34 ERA with Atlanta. A.J. Minter, Dy
lan Lee and Collin McHugh will also be called upon to get big outs.
Zach Eflin has been very effective in a relief role since returning from a knee
injury in September, so much so that the Phillies handed him the ball in the nin
th inning of both Wild Card Series games against the Cardinals. Setting him up w
ill be José Alvarado, who also pitched in both games against St. Louis, along w
ith Seranthony Domínguez and David Robertson, the latter of whom has a wealth o
f postseason experience.
Advantage: Braves

Prediction
The Phillies shocked the Cardinals with their two-game Wild Card Series sweep, b
ut the Braves aren’t about to be surprised by anybody as they begin their title
defense. Atlanta has been the hottest team in the game for the past four-plus m
onths, so while we won’t count the Phillies out -- Philadelphia did win eight g
ames against the champs this season -- it would be a surprise if the Braves didn
’t return to the NLCS for the third consecutive year.
