Allen Iverson scored nine of his game-high 29 points in the decisive fourth quarter to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 100-93 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.
The win extended the 76ers dominance of the Grizzlies to seven games, their longest current winning streak against any opponent.
With Vancouver leading 85-84 with 5:21 remaining, Iverson completed a 3-point play to put the 76ers ahead to stay. The superstar guard added two jumpers from the right corner to give Philadelphia a 91-87 cushion at the 3:39 mark.
"I just got out and ran the lanes and my teammates got me the ball," Iverson said. "When I make a couple of shots, they just keep coming to me."
Mike Bibby hit a driving layup to keep the Grizzlies close at 95-91 with 0:34 left. But Iverson, Aaron McKie and Eric Snow combined for five free throws to put away the game.
"I thought (Vancouver) played great. I thought we played darn good as well," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "We were fortunate to make the big shots down the stretch."
"We just don't have the depth from an offensive perspective to maintain continuity," said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, who spent three seasons as a member of the Sixers.
Matt Geiger had his best game of the season, scoring 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting. The 76ers' center is finding his groove after missing the first 17 games of the season recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
"It's coming," Geiger said. "Tonight I hit the shots I've been taking all year and they finally fell."
Iverson scored five points during a 13-2 first-quarter run to give the Sixers a 23-8 lead with 3:39 remaining. The Grizzlies responded with a 12-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 25-20 at the end of the period. Bibby and Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored four points a piece.
The game remained close throughout second quarter, with Philadelphia taking a 50-48 lead at halftime.
Vancouver came out strong in the third quarter, scoring seven straight points to take a 59-52 advantage at the 8:37 mark. The Grizzlies maintained a 67-61 lead with 4:42 left, but Philadelphia closed the period with a 10-4 run to forge a 71-71 tie entering the final period.
George Lynch scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Sixers, who scored 23 points off 13 Vancouver turnovers.
Abdur-Rahim tallied 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost six of their last eight home games.
Bibby finished with 18 points and 13 assists for Vancouver, which shot 48 percent (40-for-83) from the floor but was outscored 23-12 at the foul line.
Bryant Reeves had 18 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with 33 seconds left in the game.
Terrell Brandon recorded his first
career triple-double with 27 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds
as the Minnesota Timberwolves coasted to their fifth straight
win, 123-112 over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Timberwolves set a team record by shooting 64 percent
(52-of-81) from the floor, eclipsing their old mark of 63
percent set against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 31, 1993.
The win was Minnesota's 10th in 11 games.
"We're putting the ball in (Terrell's) hands and he is
responding," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "How he
played tonight is how he's been playing. He's been getting a
lot of assists and doing a lot of things."
The Wolves were on fire from the opening tip, shooting a
blistering 82 percent (18-of-22) in the first quarter to take a
39-19 lead. Brandon had nine points and five assists in the
period, while Malik Sealy scored eight points.
"In the first quarter, we were 18-of-22, Brandon said. "We're a
jump-shooting team and it's kind of contagious. When one guy
gets going, everyone else steps up and starts hitting shots. We
were hot."
"We've been playing with great flow the last couple of weeks,"
Saunders added. "I didn't expect to play that well in the first
quarter though. We just got into a great flow and were very
unselfish."
Minnesota controlled the game through the first three quarters,
continuing its sharpshooting and committing only five turnovers
to take a 99-75 lead into the final period.
Philadelphia halved the deficit, climbing within 109-97 on
Tyrone Hill's layup with 6:38 remaining. After Brandon answered
with two baskets to extend the lead to 16 points, the 76ers
responded with a 9-2 run, capped by a free throw by Allen
Iverson that sliced the margin to 115-106 at the 3:26 mark.
But Brandon and Kevin Garnett hit consecutive jumpers to put
away the game.
"I thought my team tried like crazy and didn't give up," Sixers
coach Larry Brown said. "You get a team shooting 66 percent ...
you're going to get beat by 30 points most nights. From a
coach's standpoint, I appreciate their effort and the fact that
we didn't give up under some pretty difficult circumstances."
Minnesota recorded its highest first-half point total of the
season, taking a 68-50 lead into intermission. The 76ers closed
to 86-72 on a 3-pointer by Iverson with 3:55 remaining in the
third quarter, but the Timberwolves scored the next 11 points
and took a 24-point bulge into the final period.
Sealy finished with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting while going
7-of-7 at the line. Garnett chipped in 20 points, eight assists
and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have won six of
their last seven on the road.
"When we went through our losing streak, we found out that
staying together is very important," said Garnett, referring to
the eight-game slide that preceeded the current tear. "We found
out a lot about ourselves."
Joe Smith added 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench for
Minnesota, which is 12-0 this season when shooting at least 50
percent.
Iverson scored 37 points and Aaron McKie added 17 for
Philadelphia, which shot 45 percent (40-of-89) and committed
only nine turnovers.
"I don't want to get into moral victories, but we gave ourselves
a chance," McKie said. "We could have easily gave up and just
stopped fighting and let them do what they wanted. But we hung
in there, kept playing tough and gave ourselves a chance to win
down the stretch."
Theo Ratliff, who was activated from the injured list before the
game, had a miserable night. The Sixers forward fouled out in
the third quarter with no points, two rebounds and five
turnovers in 11 minutes.
