<3 重點句型:
It was in the 1990s that fughting at least brought...
--> 強調句用法:It was + 強調部分(可為人、物、地、時) + that...
It was me to whom the doctor spoke most often.
--> 此句亦為「強調句」,而片語speak to sb表「和...人說話」,介系詞to向前移到關代that之前,而因that前面不可有逗點及介系詞,因此that改為受格關代whom。
He called for his father again and again, a claw tightening itself around his windpipe.
--> 除了大家很熟悉的分詞構句,也要多學習一下獨立分詞構句。原句為:He called for his father..., and a claw tightened itself...,其中連接詞and被省略,主詞he以及a claw不相同,故a claw留下,再將動詞改為表主動的tightening。這是生動寫作的其中一種常見手法。
I felt as though I had been the one cuckolded.
--> as though即等於as if,表「彷彿」,為假設語氣的一種,所以與過去事實相反,要改用過去完成式(had been the one...)
What if he fell into a well, or got lost?
--> what if亦為假設語氣,時態一樣要退一步,文中原為現在式,故退成了過去式(fell into...got lost...)
I had little trouble carrying him for I was still young and able.
--> have trouble/problem/difficulty + Ving為固定句型,而文中的for是連接詞,表「因為」。
